The Butterfly Effect (Boggy Creek Valley 1) - Page 35

Bree stopped at her BMW and leaned against it. She pressed her free hand to her heart. “Well, the kiss was freaking amazing. Like, legit, I think it was the best kiss I’ve ever had in my entire life.”

I raised my brows. “Wow. Go Hunter.”

She nodded before continuing on. “Then he leaned his forehead against mine and said, ‘I should probably go.’ To which I said, ‘Or you should probably come in.’”

I laughed. “So what happened after you invited him in?”

“The moment we stepped inside my hotel room and the door shut, we took one look at each other and he was fucking me up against the door five minutes later. I’m so glad I got a hotel room last night.”

“Oh God! Oh my gosh. Blah. Gag me! Ugh. Why the visual?” I cried out as I spun in different directions in an attempt to wipe the image from my mind. When I looked back at Bree, she was leaning against her car, lost in memory with a smile on her face.

“After that he carried me to the shower and we fucked again. He asked me if I wanted him to stay, I said I did, so we took things to the bed and had a bit of fun until around three when he said he had to get home to his dog. It was the perfect night.”

“Ugh,” I said again as I pressed my hands to my ears.

“Your brother has stamina like no other man I’ve ever been with. My vajayjay is thoroughly exhausted.”

I pressed harder against my ears. “Stop! Please, for the love of all things good in this world, stop!”

Bree shrugged. “Sorry, but you asked.”

I dropped my hands to my sides. “You could have said we had a great evening, I really like your brother, and I hope he likes me. I would have been okay with that!”

“What’s the fun in that?” she said with a wink before taking a drink of her coffee. “Besides, I’m not looking for anything serious, and neither is he. I got the feeling he needed our night together as much as I did.”

I shook my head. “So, you’re not going to see him again when you come into town?”

She shot me an evil little smile. “Oh, I intend on seeing him if he’s available. Best sex of my life.”

Rolling my eyes, I said, “I’m going to get my son.”

“What about you?” she called out. “Were you a Frog Hog last night?”

Stopping, I turned and gave a little pout, which made her laugh. “No, we didn’t hook up, but it’s probably for the best.”

Bree pushed off the side of her car and walked around the front of it as she made her way to the driver’s side. “Why? You certainly wanted him to look at you, and I figured with the two of you leaving together…”

“That’s different. A little bit of harmless flirting is different.”

She smirked. “Is that all it was? Willa, you looked like you wanted to jump the man the moment he walked into the bar.”

I looked away, heat coursing up my neck to my cheeks.

“Hey, you’re not mad that I didn’t tell you he would be there, are you?” Bree asked, her voice soft and filled with concern. “I mean, I know you truly do have deep feelings for Aiden, and the way he looks at you, I’d say the feelings are mutual.”

Drawing in a deep breath, I blew it out slowly. “Of course I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at all the confusing thoughts in my head. I’m mad because Aiden fell asleep on his sofa last night. I’m mad because all I wanted was for him to…to…”

“To what?”

I shook my head. “Nothing. I have a son I need to focus on right now. The last thing I need to do is sleep with a man.”

She opened the door to her car and slid in, but before she closed it, she shouted, “I’d highly recommend it. You’re too tense!”

I shot her the finger, which only made her smile bigger.

“I’ll follow you!”

“To my folks’?”

She gave me a thumbs-up and called back, “Yes! Maybe I can talk Hunter into another round today.”

I made like I was gagging as I slid into my car. But once I was in and buckling my seat, I had a smile on my face.

“Oh, why can’t I be more like Brighton Rogers?”

Willa

As I drove down the long drive that led to my parents’ house and the orchards, I felt a sense of happiness come over me. On each side of the driveway sat acres and acres of apple trees. For as far as your eye could see, nothing but apple trees.

Boggy Creek Valley Apple Orchard.

This was my home. My future. My entire life, besides Ben.

I gripped the steering wheel harder as the memory of Aiden looking at me like he wanted me as much as I wanted him came back to me. When I had come down after changing out of my dress, I had been so disappointed to see him asleep—but at the same time relieved. I’d waited so long to be with Aiden, and to suddenly have him here, and to feel the way I still felt, made me a little unsure. Of what, I didn’t exactly know. Fifteen-year-old Willa would have probably crawled on top of him and taken what she wanted. Twenty-seven-year-old Willa was scared of being rejected by him again. But the way he looked at twenty-seven-year-old me. Lord, he made me come to life.
