Of Fae and Hate - Page 34

There’s no windows in this room and that was the only set of stairs.

We’re trapped.

The high from the Olix is completely gone now and my chest tightens. “The stairs have disappeared.” I point out, needing someone else to acknowledge the fact that some bullshit is going on here. Fox turns, inclining his head slightly.t “What?”

I point to the vacant spot. “The stairs are gone,” I repeat.

He blinks, his gaze riveted to the spot. He opens his mouth to say something at the same time that Brynsyn curses and Soskia lets out a scream.

Something black flies across the room.

I hit the floor out of instinct, even though I have no idea what the fuck I’m trying to get away from.

I crane my head as I roll onto my back, letting out a screech even louder than Soskia’s when something that definitely looks like a black ghost flies overhead.

I did not sign up for this shit.

“What the hell?” Fox ducks out of the way as the thing flies in his direction.

“Shit!” Brynsyn finally moves into action and I watch as he throws the book he was holding to the side. The thick, old thing falls to the ground with a loud thud. Brynsyn doesn’t try to run away from the black ghost thing, running right at it.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Alik shouts, tackling Brynsyn a moment before the ghost can slam into him.

“Get off of me!” Brynsyn shouts.

My heart is going wild in my chest and I feel like a sitting duck. All these magical creatures in the room and none of them seem to know what the fuck to do other than run. And me, I have no powers at all, which means I’m at more risk than the rest.

My mind is going crazy with ways to get out of this situation but considering there aren;t any exits, a solution has to come from inside of the room.

I frantically look around the room for some sort of weapon, my eyes stopping on Soskia whos’ huddled in the corner. The girl has completely shut down, her knees pulled to her chest and her head tucked against them with her hands splayed across the back of her neck.

She’s shaking.

This is more than shock for her.

Has she come across one of these things before?

“I said let me up, Alik!” Brynsyn shouts and this has to be the most serious I’ve ever seen him.

Alik doesn’t budge, even as Brynsyn fights to get him off of the top of him.

“Cerus, get him the fuck off of me!” Brynsyn’s voice is in more than a little panic now.

The ghost thing doesn’t seem to be concerned with the fight going on on the ground, its attention now on Soskia who hasn’t moved. The black shape jets off in her direction.

“Fuck.”

I scramble to my feet, and with how clumsy I feel as I scuffle over to her, I don’t know how I make it in time, but somehow I do.

My body collides with hers and we both hit the ground. The black blob just barely misses us and when I look up, it's already dashing back in our direction. Soskia is deadweight as I try to pull her away from the thing. She’s laid out on her back now, her bright eyes completely vacant.

She’s no longer here in this moment.

“Help!” I shout.

Alik’s head tilts to the side and when his gaze lands on Soskia, he lets out a curse before abandoning Brynsyn. He’s to us in a flash, hauling Soskia up and over his shoulder.

Brynsyn is climbing to his feet and he grabs my wrist, throwing me to the ground as the blob comes back. “The book!” he shouts a moment before the blob slams into him.
