Cruel Summer - Page 97

From the smirk that crosses her lips, I’m sure she knows exactly where my mind is at.

“Something happened with Winter,” I tell her, rubbing my chin. Enzo had relayed what he knew to me and well, the extent of what he knew wasn’t far. Winter had drowned, Enzo didn’t know how, but he suspected that it wasn’t due to her own neglect.

He’d found Vito carrying her through the house looking like someone killed his favorite puppy. He didn’t think Vito was the reason she’s drowned, he was actually sure of it. And I hadn’t been home at the time. Which leaves Giovanni as the culprit.

As it is, I haven’t seen my brother over the last few days.

Definitely guilty.

Enzo’s been keeping an eye on her, along with Vito.

I didn’t think much of it until today when Winter had finally made an appearance out of her room. She’d looked like absolute shit and kept her gaze on the ground for the most part. I hadn’t missed the scrapes and scars that peeked out from beneath her shorts.

Whatever my brother had done before drowning her must have been brutal.

Still, I’d kept to myself, not bothering her for once.

Until she’d looked at Enzo from across the eyes and I saw it.

The stupid way her face had softened, her eyes riveted to my Enzo. He’d caught her gaze and while he hadn’t smiled at her, it’d been close enough. His lip tipping up the slightest fraction.

It’d been completely unacceptable.

I’d wanted to walk across the room and punch him right in those same lips, before forcing him to his knees and making him deepthroat me, all while Winter watched.

Instead, I’d marched up to my office, showing a restraint I didn’t even realize I was capable of.

I relay the whole situation to Lucia and with each line her smile grows more wicked. And I have to continue to back away from her until I’m safely behind my desk.

And so this streak of restraint continues.

“You’re mad because she looked at him and he didn’t smile at her, but it wasn’t a frown either?” she asks, raising a brow.

My fists clench and I look for something else to throw off of my desk but unfortunately there’s nothing left. I point a finger at Lucia. “You don’t understand.”

“Oh, I understand perfectly,” she muses. “You’re acting like a little kid who caught another kid eyeing his lollipop.”

I decide, for her sake, that I’m done entertaining my cousin. She doesn’t understand this problem and if she continues to piss me off, I’m going to be forced to either take it out on her or find Enzo and take it out on him.

Or Winter.

“I’m done talking to you,” I tell her, plopping back down in my desk chair and trying to gain control of my temper.

Lucia stands, moving up to my desk and placing her hands on it. “Again, trying to help you figure out your problem.”

I wave a hand at her. I’m done. “We already went over the solution: fucking and murder.”

She rolls her eyes, as if I’m the one being ridiculous. “Of course, and have you decided which one you’re going to fuck and which one you’re going to murder?”

“Both. I’m going to fuck and murder them both.”

“Make sure you let me know how that goes for you.”
