Cruel Summer - Page 66

Vito rises to his feet and I know he plans on following me which is the last thing I need right now, with his hot gaze fresh in my mind.

“Don’t trust me to not allow anything to happen to her in my club?” Dox asks, tilting his head to the side.

“With all due respect, we don’t trust anyone to take care of my property, except for us,” Giovanni dips in before Vito can say anything. Giovanni waves a hand, gesturing for Vito to continue on in accompanying me.

Dox doesn’t say anything else, but he watches us closely, his gaze following us across the club.

When we get to the bathroom door, I turn, looking at Vito and raising a brow. “Do you need to watch me wipe too?” I ask him.

His jaw tightens even though there’s still a lingering heat in his gaze. “Do you not remember the last time that you were taken, it was from a bathroom?”

“There’s one door,” I point out to him. “Anyone wants to get me, they’re going to have to pass by you.”

His eyes narrow but after a moment he just lets out a soft sigh. “Go ahead.”

I push the bathroom door open, thankful for the cool air blowing inside. There’s three stalls and all of them are open except for the last one. I’m walking past the first stall when the last one is slowly eased open.

I stop in my tracks.

I blink as Diamond’s large frame exits the stall.

“This is the women’s bathroom,” I say to him, keeping my voice low. I don’t want to tip Vito off.

“Had to do what I could, darling. When I saw you heading this way, I figured this would be the only opportunity I get to talk to you tonight.”

He isn’t wrong.

The Costas are going to be watching me like hawks the whole night, Vito’s presence outside of the bathroom door evidence.

“I hear Sheffield’s people busted you up pretty good,” he says.

I shrug, “Yeah, but we don’t have time to talk about that tonight. I need more information.”

“What sort of information?” he asks, his brows pinching together.

“Proof that the Costas actually killed my mom.”

He lets out a humorless laugh, shaking his head. “You weren’t asking for that shit the last time we talked.”

I shrug, “Yeah, well, I really don’t have any reason to trust you, do I? I was only caught up in what you told me last time, I didn’t have time to ask any questions. But as soon as I had time to clear my head I realized this could be a trap. There was no reason for you to come to me with this shit, especially with no proof.”

He blows out a long breath. “I don’t quite understand why they keep you around if you’re this difficult.”

Probably because I let them throw me around like a fucking rag doll.

“How do you suppose I get this god damn proof that you want?” he asks.

“I don’t know.” But I need it, need something to restore that initial anger that I felt when he first came to me. Because right now, that anger is dwindling with every little touch from the Costas and I can’t let that happen.

“You’re a fucking difficult one, you know?” He sounds irritated but there is also a note of something else laced in his tone. “When I have something I’ll come by the club.”

“Okay,” I tell him before my gaze moves to the door. “I’ve got to get out of here before Vito comes crashing in,” I tell him. I move into one of the stalls and flush the toilet.

As I move to the sink to wash my hands, Diamond slides back into the same stall he’d popped out of.

I take one last deep breath before I exit the bathroom. Vito leans off of the wall and the look he gives me is too suspicious for my liking. Just when I think he’s going to say something, he just shakes his head and gestures for me to follow him back into the club.
