Cruel Summer - Page 43

“But if the only connection I have to him is my mother, then there’s no use for me. It’s not like I’m involved with Seven Quad or know anyone the way she did.”

I hadn’t ever come directly into contact with a Seven Quad member until the Costas had drug me into their filthy, ugly world.

“No, but, whatever Giovanni is up to, I can assure you that he thought it out. He had a long time to do so, after all.” He plucks his toothpick from between his lips, twirling it between his fingers.

“Why are you telling me all of this?” I ask him, rubbing my chest.

He shrugs. “I can’t say that I’m doing it completely out of the goodness of my heart,” he says. He splits the toothpick in half before his eyes lift up to mine. “I figure, as it is, I hate the Costas, and knowing the truth, you have to hate them more than you already did.”

“Of course,” I say harshly, swiping at the few tears that still remain on my face.

“Perfect, that means we can work together.”

I sniff, shaking my head. “Just because I hate them doesn’t mean I trust you now.”

“Which is ridiculous, considering I’ve proved to be trustworthy, but I won’t push. All I need for you to know is that I can help you get out of whatever Giovanni has planned for you and in turn, you can help me take him down when the time comes. Hell, I’ll even let you pull the trigger.”

Silence sits between us as we stare at one another. Finally, I nod my head and a cruel smile spreads over his lips.

His gaze moves over the club and he pauses. “Seems it’s my time to go. Your little guard dog is heading this way.” He starts to stand before his gaze moves over me. “But Winter?”

“What?”

“Don’t you want to know who it was that Giovanni ordered to kill your mother?”

Do I?

I don’t know many people in the family directly, just the small inner circle I’ve been exposed to and this was a long time ago. But from the sneaky look on Diamond’s face, I have a suspicion that I know the person.

“Maximo?” I ask, knowing he’s the most logical person to have done it.

“Nope.” He sets another foot out of the booth. He leans a little closer to me and when he whispers the name, my whole world turns. “Vito Bianchi.”
