Cruel Summer - Page 8

Because I can respect that an overworked pony still knows some good tricks.

“Sheffield,” my brother says in warning, taking me out of thoughts about his fiance’s pussy.

Sheffield is red in the face. I can’t tell if he's more embarrassed or angry but I’m hoping it’s the latter. If he’s pissed enough, he just may try to physically challenge my brother. In public of all places. Which will lead to a pretty entertaining fight as my brother loses the pin on the grenade that is his temper.

I know from experience that once that pin is pulled, there’s no reeling it back. And fuck if Giovanni doesn’t pack a stong ass punch.

“It’s almost as if you want your brother to start a war,” Polo quips, reminding me of his presence.

“Not a war, but definitely a fight. When was the last time a good fist fight broke out at one of these things?” I ask him while keeping my eyes on the drama unfolding in front of us.

“When you tempted me into starting a fight with Vito over Winter,” he reminds me.

I wave a dismissive hand at him. “No real blows were exchanged.”

“Sheffield, you’re going to want to lower your voice and think twice about disrespecting me,” Giovanni says, bringing my attention back to him. His body has gone eerily still, his face flat.

I lean forward, waiting for him to snap. Winter, on the other hand, tries to take a step away from my brother. Enzo has released her now that she’s calmed down, but when she moves away she only bumps into Vito, who wraps his fingers around her wrist.

Where the fuck did he even come from?

A crease forms between my brows as an unfamiliar feeling moves through me, deep in my chest. I rip my gaze away from them, knowing now is not the time for my hatred for Vito to rear its head, yet again.

“Giovanni, if you want to keep our partnership peaceful, then you need to put your bitch down.”

I honestly would have never suspected that Sheffield would actually have the balls to say such a thing to Giovanni.

As far as he knows, Giovanni actually likes Winter, and blatantly disrespecting her the way that he is could definitely have strong repercussions. Usually, I’d say that Sheffield is too much a bitch to ever risk the wrath of my brother. But the way he stands, backs straight, arms folded over his chest, I figure he’s thought well and hard about this.

My fingers twitch for a cigarette, something to do while I continue to watch the scene unfold in front of me. Remembering my wine glass, I raise it to my lips again.

My brother says something to Sheffield, his voice way too low for me to hear. I creep a little closer, wanting to know whether or not I need to be prepared to pull my gun out.

My brother has two options, he can write off Sheffield’s words off as an overwhelming amount of emotion and an incident that won’t be repeated, or he can take the disrespectful words for what they are and cut the man and his daughter’s heads right off and deliver it to their remaining family as a final sign of war.

I suspect I know which one he’s going to go with.

When Sheffield whispers something harshly back, before taking a step away from my brother, disappointment moves through me.

Of course he chose to be peaceful this one time.

As much as I hate to acknowledge it, we need Sheffield. Our numbers are still too low and my brother is up to something when it comes to the seven quad gang. Something that’s going to require us to need a lot of numbers, and that’s where Sheffield and his family come in. While they aren’t exactly a mob family, they are an influential one and the connections, as well as the soldiers they have, could help us when the time comes.

Sheffield turns on his heels, grabbing his daughter and pulling her along with him. She looks back at Giovanni with longing on her face. What a fucking idiot. When her gaze moves over Winter, it changes completely though, her brows pinching together and her lips turning down into a scowl.

Winter only stares back at her, unfazed.

She looks as if she’s ready to knock the shit out of her if Sienna so much as tries to attack her again. And I’d be a liar if I said that it wasn’t hot as hell.

I adjust my dick.

“How discreet,” Polo mutters from a couple of feet behind me. I only turn and give him a smirk.

I open my mouth to tell him to fuck off, but switch my gaze back to my brother when he starts to move toward the exit. Vito goes with him, their steps practically in sync and their heads bowed as they exchange words. My brother’s gaze flicks up to me and he pauses, watching me for a moment. He gives a subtle nod of his head and I know it’s the sign that I need to be leaving the party soon and meeting him at the house.

I send him a thumbs up and watch as he blows out a breath of irritation.

I grin.
