my car. I dump the files on my seat and stare at the dash for a

long time before I finally slip my key in and head home.

Chapter 18

Stephanie

I’ve pretty much always looked at my parents having money

as being really annoying. That sounds bad. I don’t mean it that

way. I’m happy for them. I’m happy that all the work they put

into the company paid off and all their dreams came true. I’m

happy that they can have nice things. I’m happy they don’t

have to struggle. I’m thankful that my brother and I have

always been looked after, even before they had money.

My brother and I went to a regular school. It was a nice

school, but it wasn’t private or boarding school or anything

like that. My parents lived most of their lives not having

money, like everyone else, and they stayed like regular people

after. They didn’t go all out and buy a mansion a

nd super

expensive things. They did take us for good vacations after we

had extra. They did eventually get a nicer house that they had

built just how they wanted. They did eventually upgrade their

cars to sensible, yet expensive sedans. My mom isn’t big into

designer brands, but she did start wearing more expensive

clothes that fit her better. Spending more on shoes. We all

benefited from it. We got sent to camps that I know we never

would have been able to go to.

I love that money gave us the opportunity to

experience so many different things we wouldn’t have been

able to otherwise. I guess I just started getting annoyed with it

when I was older and realized that people treat you differently.
