“What were you going to say?”

“Just that English is safe. I was going to say there’s not

much danger in offending people there, but that’s the stupidest

thing. Of course there is. Lots of books offended people.

Books were burned. Books are incredibly powerful. That was

the dumbest thought ever. I guess that maybe what I do is

safe.” I take a sip of tea and decide to stop talking. The peach

flavour bursts over my tongue and tastes better than anything

I’ve had in the last month.

It wouldn’t taste better than Steph would. She’d be

sweet. So, so sweet.

Jesus. I very nearly jump out of my seat. Errant

thoughts like that are not getting me anywhere.

“I think you must have to take lots of risks. At least

you run the risk of clients being mad at you for not hooking

them up with Mr. Right on the first try.”

I swallow hard. “Sometimes it gets a little gnarly but

most of my clients are quite patient. Although, I have had a

few who were really unsatisfied with their matches and

complained. My boss really hates that.”

Steph’s face tightens. “Are you under a lot of pressure

to find me a match?”

“No!” I lie. “We treat all of our clients the same.”

That’s also a lie. Steph might not be famous, but my boss

knows that her parents have money and so now he likes to

think of her as a higher profile client. He’s kind of gross that

way. Usually he’s okay, but sometimes he can be a huge

butthole.

“That’s a relief.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll find someone. I’ll send those
