Once I hit thirty, I could practically see my mom calculating

the eggs I have left every single time she looks at me.

I also picked this agency because I was promised total

discretion. I know I need to come clean to Adley if she doesn’t

already know who I am. She probably knows a little, but I

don’t know if she knows everything. It’s hard to find a good

boyfriend, someone who loves you for you, when they find out

your parents have tons and tons of money. Suddenly it

becomes more about hanging on for that big payout than it is

about actual feelings, and that’s just gross.

“Yes. Sorry.” I nod hard, snapping out of my thoughts

when I realize Adley is looking at me funny. No, not funny.

More like despairingly. She thinks I’m going to walk out

before I even give her a chance. “It’s fine. I’m glad you

brought Tildy. I really enjoy kids. Like I said. Uh, this is

probably going to be awkward, at least for me, so maybe this

will be better. Easier to talk about things.”

“I do have some questions for the profile, but I promise

I’ll make them as painless as possible.”

“Why would questions be painful? They can’t actually

hurt, can they?” Tildy takes a massive gulp out of her cup and

wipes her mouth with the back of her arm.

I suppress a giggle. “I guess that’s an expression,” I tell

her. “People mean that questions or words can hurt your

feelings.”

“Oh. We wouldn’t hurt your feelings. You seem nice.

But even if you were a baddie, we’d still be nice to you. That’s

the best way to roll.”

I bite down on my bottom lip, but I’m pretty sure my
