“No. I’d find something else, but I’m quite sure that Alicia would have worked it into the deal—that employees of New Belle would stay on board.”

“Something like that can’t always be guaranteed, even if initially agreed to,” Trent pointed out.

Scarlett shook her head. “Alicia would have found some way to make sure that happened. She stood by her word.”

Yet Alicia wasn’t going to keep her word with regards to the arrangement she’d originally concocted with Eve Kelley. According to Eve, Alicia was going with a higher bidder and cutting Eve out of the deal. “Could we see Tony’s office?”

“Sure.”

Scarlett saw them inside, and Amanda took in the space. Adequate size, nothing fancy. A nice desk, a nice view, a nice sitting area off to the right.

“Detectives?” A man’s voice at the doorway.

Amanda turned around. Harold Armstrong was standing there. And she wasn’t quite sure what it was—the mud on his tires, his lie to them about the last time he’d seen Alicia, or just a niggling in her gut—but his presence made the room feel cold.
