The Empty Land (A Hunter Kincaid Novel) - Page 17

“I’ll do it face to face, when I leave here.”

Sam said, “What about Miguel?”

“He’s too valuable a witness to things, including seeing the people in the helicopter. You are too, Sam. What it is, I’ll need you to bring Miguel to the Marfa station and I’ll work to get him temporary authority to stay in the US. But both of you will need to stay someplace safe.”

Sam said, “Sure.”

Hunter sighed, “Staying at your ranch is not a good idea.”

“I’ve got stock out there. They can’t take care of themselves. But if you’ll fix those papers for Miguel so he can help me, we won’t stay out there all the time. How’s that?”

“I’m not gonna win on this, am I.”

“It’s my home, Hunter.”

“I know. Promise me that you’ll keep an eye out and a weapon handy.”

“Miguel and I won’t even go to the bathroom without one.”

Mona said, “I can rig up a few things for them to give advanced notice if someone’s coming on the ranch.”

Sam said, “Thank you, Mona.”

Hunter gathered the photos and the watch. “I’ll call Marfa and have Huffman meet you when you and Miguel get there. He can do the work on Miguel while I’m in Presidio talking to Lee.”

Sam said, “I like Huffman. He’s a good one.”

“Yeah, he is.” She turned to Mona, “Call me if you find out anything else.”

Mona said, “Same here. I can run down things that you might not be able to. Off the record, of course.”

“Of course.”

Hunter drove into Presidio and saw Lee in his personal pickup, the big, dusty, six-year old Dodge Ram. Lee waved for her to follow, and he led the way to the high school stadium.

When they exited their vehicles, Hunter said, “We here to toss around the football?”

“Hah. Our Acting Sheriff is in town, shaking hands and kissing babies. I wanted to stay out of his way.” He led the way onto the bleachers, using them for shade from the afternoon sun. He stopped at the seats on the fifty-yard line and sat down. “What you said on the phone has me antsy. Why don’t you go over all of it again?” Hunter did.

Lee looked at the photos several times, then re-examined the watch. “I have to tell Danny about this.”

“I know. Did you ever make contact with CISEN in Ojinaga?”

“I did. Mr. Cavill is in Ojinaga today, and looking quite studly.”

Hunter shook her head, “You never give up, do you.”

“Just making a statement, is all.”

“So you can get this info to him?”

“Yeah, it’s first on my list.”

“Good.”

Lee asked, “Are these photos my copies?”

“No, but I’ll send you some. You want a photo of the watch?”
