God I Hate that Man - Page 28

But there’s nothing even remotely resembling a robe.

I curse under my breath and head back towards my room. I guess I’ll just have to throw my blouse back on if I need to wander around in the middle of the night. As I reach out my hand to open the door and go back into my room, I remember Finn saying the room opposite mine was a gym which I’m welcome to use. There’s not much chance of that. The only time I work out is when I’m so mad I can’t quite get rid of all of the pent-up tension inside of myself unless I pound it out on something.

But I’m curious as to what equipment he has so I push the door open and step inside. The room is as well-equipped as any public gym I’ve ever been to, which granted, is only two, but still. There’s a treadmill, a rowing machine, an elliptical, and an exercise bike. And that’s just the cardio stuff. There are free weights, various machines I don’t even recognize, and a few machines I do. My attention falls on the far wall though. There are a few pegs there and hanging from them is a pair of sweatpants and a nicely ironed, light blue shirt. I smile to myself and grab the shirt.

I’m sure Finn won’t mind me wearing it, and it’s only for one night. I’ll buy a pair of pajamas tomorrow. Even if he does mind, I know he would rather me take the shirt without permission than go into his office while he’s having a video conference with a potential new client and ask him if I can wear the shirt.

I go back to my room and strip off down to my panties again. I slip the shirt on. It’s big on me, but I like that for bed. It smells of laundry detergent, fresh and clean, which I definitely like. I check my phone and see it’s almost one in the morning. I turn the light off and finally slip into bed.

I moan with pleasure as I feel the cool, silky sheets against my skin and the soft mattress beneath me. Finn sure knows how to choose the right mattress and bedding for maximum comfort. If this is the guest bed, I can’t help but wonder what his bed is like. I push this thought away quickly before I decide I have to know, and go investigate.

I grin at the thought of Finn’s call ending then him going into his bedroom and finding me in his bed, an accidental, dark-haired Goldilocks. I figure I’d be straight back out onto the streets before I could even say who’s been sleeping in my bed. Wait, no that isn’t Goldilocks’ line, is it?

Ah well, it’s late and that’s my excuse for getting it wrong, so I’m sticking to it. I snuggle down into the bed, yawn and close my eyes.

Twenty minutes later, I am still wide-awake and getting more restless by the second. My throat is dry and it’s stopping me from sleeping. I sit up and throw the covers back. I slip quietly out of the room and head for the kitchen.

Finn’s office door is ajar, light spilling out into the hallway. He’s no longer talking so I assume his meeting is done with.

I go to the kitchen, find a glass and fill it with tap water. I drink it down in one go, rinse out the glass, and set it down on the draining board beside the sink. Then I head back towards my room, but I know it’s not just thirst keeping me awake. I like to spend half an hour or so before bed losing myself in a good book. No matter how late it is, I seem to need that routine to convince my mind it’s time to switch off and sleep. Of course, in my hurry to leave the house before my mom tried to talk me out of leaving, I didn’t even think to grab a book.

I wonder if Finn has any.

I give a cursory glance around the living room, but there are no bookshelves anywhere, and the books on his coffee table are those pretentious photobooks meant to send a message rather than be read and enjoyed. I roll my eyes. He’s such a walking cliché in some ways.

I go back down the hallway and as I approach Finn’s office, I notice the wall I can see through the slightly open door is lined with books. I smile to myself. Surely, there’s something in there I can read. Even if it’s a business book, it’s better than nothing.

I pause in the doorway for a moment, making sure that Finn is definitely not talking anymore. I wait a couple of minutes until I’m confident the meeting is really over and then I tap lightly on the door and step in.
