Corsairs: Kaspar (Corsair Brothers 2) - Page 84

"For?"

"For trying to cheer me up." She offers me a weak smile, but the distracted expression on her face remains.

She's quiet all through dinner, picking at her food. I steal a few noodles from her, expecting her to slap at my hand like she normally does. Alice is fierce when it comes to her food. But her vague expression remains, and she lets me eat half of her food before she gives up and offers the full plate to me.

I feel so bad for my sweet, loving Sunshine. She adores that silly carinoux, and she must be worried sick. I clean up, shoving the dishes into the mess bins and then scooping her up into my arms. "You know what you need?" I tell her. "A nice, hearty cunt-licking to distract you."

"Kas," she protests, even as I hold her up against the ladder to the bedroom. She climbs up and waits for me by the rungs, that miserable expression on her face.

"No arguments," I say cheerfully. "I'm determined to pleasure you hard and thoroughly so you can go to bed with a smile." The moment I climb up the ladder, my cock is hard and I'm more than ready to spend the rest of my evening between my mate's thighs. Really, it's a present for both of us.

"I don't think I want sex right now," Alice tells me.

I press my hand to her soft forehead. She has no plating here, and I've noticed she touches it sometimes when she feels warm. "Are you fevered? Ill?"

She pushes my hand away. "I'm just trying to think."

"Can you do it with me between your thighs? It doesn't have to be sex, but I would like to pleasure you. Just one orgasm. Maybe two." I shimmy down her body, tugging at her skirt. "I'll make you feel good. You just keep on thinking. Don't mind me."

"Kas," she says again, stopping me with a touch of her hand.

"What is it, love?"

Her mouth works for a moment, and then her eyes get curiously shiny. "I think I might be pregnant."

I immediately try to think of something clever to say. Nothing springs to mind. In fact, my mind is blank. Just…blank. My hand remains on her skirt, even as my head remains as empty as space itself.

Pregnant.

Alice might be carrying my baby.

I lick my lips, trying to think of the right thing to say. "How?"

"I don't know." She blinks rapidly, as if fighting those tears to stay back. "But Sterre…her going into heat made me realize I haven't had my period since I left the Star. And while I occasionally miss a month, I never miss two in a row. This is two and some change." Alice swallows hard. "So I don't know what's up with that."

"Do you feel different? Anything changed?" I sound logical and calm, but mostly I just want her to not cry. Alice's tears break me.

"I don't think so? I thought I would feel different, but I feel the same as I ever did?" She shakes her head. "I thought you couldn't get me pregnant."

"I'm not supposed to be able to, no. Maybe my seed is just really, really determined." I press a kiss to her flat stomach. "It is mine, after all. I'm known to be hard-headed."

"Does…does this change things between us?" she asks in a low voice.

"Other than the fact that I'm now going to panic when you go up and down the rope? Not for me." I kiss her skin, trying to seem as casual as possible. Alice pregnant changes things, all right. It changes everything for me. But I don't want her to feel like her choices have been torn from her because that one-in-a-million chance of getting her pregnant seemed to be in our favor.

When I get out of here, I'm heading to the nearest space station casino, sure. Seems like my luck is through the roof.

And then, I guess I'm going farming with Alice and my kid, because there's no way they're leaving me behind.

"Do you want to be a dad?" Alice asks. There's so much fear in her voice. I can only imagine how she feels. The universe seems determined to break her into small pieces, chew her up, and spit her out.

She's lucky she has me at her side. "I love the thought."

She exhales, relaxing. "I guess I don't have to hunt you down for child support, then." She pokes the tip of my nose to let me know she's teasing. "Which is good, because I'm not the best at trapping men…" She pauses, thinking. "A pit trap."

I'm not following. "What?"

"Pit traps," Alice says again, propping up on her elbows in the bed. "The enemy knows we're here, right? Instead of us going to them, why don't we wait and force whoever it is to come to us?"
