“But it’s not the dream,” said Jake.

Matty put an arm around him. “It’s OK, Jake. We’ll keep looking. We’ll find it.”

I put on a posh accent and waved my hand delicately in the air. “I do apologize, dear, but I’ve just gotten so accustomed to perfection, I simply couldn’t survive living in anything less.”

I turned to him and snapped my finger. “Good call. We passed a nice-looking bakery on the way.”

Matty furrowed his brow. “We also passed a few nice restaurants, too.”

I gave him a wink. “No reason we can’t do both.”

“No reason at all,” he replied.

Turning back, I slid my hand into Jake’s back pocket. “I don’t know why,” I said, “but I’ve got an irresistible craving for gingerbread.”
