“I see,” she said, feeling a little dazed.
Kalisek leaned over the desk, his expression boring into hers. “You see—and that’s the whole beginning and end of it. Now, get out on the streets.”
Sin nodded, excitement beginning to stir inside her as she realized she wasn’t being suspended, and that she and Jake would be together. “Thanks, Lieutenant.”
“Welcome back, Officer O’Rourke.”
Outside the lieutenant’s office, Jake straightened from the wall, his expression tense. “You okay?”
Sin walked past him, brushing her hand surreptitiously against his. “Never better.”
Jake glanced back at the lieutenant’s door then kept pace with her as she strode toward the parking garage and their squad car. “So, you’re not being suspended?”
“Not even close. I’ll tell you in the car,” she said, dropping her voice.
As she walked through the station house, today the glances cast her way weren’t furtive or shadowed with suspicions. A couple of the officers offered her greetings. Beno gave her a wink as she passed him by.
Pushing through the glass doors, Sin drew a deep breath, feeling for the first time since the day she’d been shot, that the world was right. She was exactly where she belonged and with the one man who loved her and all her thorns.
At the squad car, she opened her door then glanced at him over the top of the car. “Have I told you I love you?”
Jake gave a quick look around, then leaned over the car. “About a dozen times, but you might not have been counting since you were coming in my mouth.”
Sin felt the warmth of his smile all the way to her toes.
Jake started to duck inside then straightened and lifted his hand, the keys dangling from his fingers.
Sin arched one eyebrow. No way.
Jake grinned. “Want to drive?”
