Defying His Charm - Page 40

The day had started off so perfectly! Naya had been warm and snuggling in his arms, her bright, beautiful hair tickling his neck and her soft body wrapped closely around him.

What the hell had happened?

Vendors were messing up orders, realtors were calling demanding additional units, he had five companies asking for more than ten thousand square feet of office space and there was some virus going through the office, knocking people out sick. It was like the entire world was conspiring against him seeing Naya tonight!

But that wasn’t going to happen! No way! He needed her more than he needed his next breath. Damn, just a smile from her and he would feel better.

When his assistant walked into his office with a look on her face that indicated he was not going to like whatever had gone wrong next, he held up his hands. “I don’t want to know.”

Debra laughed. “It can wait until tomorrow,” she told him. “From the frustrated look on your face, you have a better place to be than here.”

Luke’s shoulders relaxed. “You’re right.” He rubbed his forehead. “But tell me what’s going on.”

She shook her head. “There’s just a problem with a supplier. I’ll hand this off to Marcy to work her magic. She knows these people better than anyone I know, has them all wrapped around her little finger.”

Luke laughed. “Yes. Marcy can work magic.” He looked around at his desk, wondering if there was anything else that urgently needed his attention.

Debra understood his expression and shook her head as she grabbed his jacket, handing it to him. “Nothing more can be done about these issues tonight. Everyone else has gone home. You go too.” And she pushed him out of his office.

Luke took his coat and lifted his cell phone out of his pocket. He’d already texted Naya earlier, letting her know that he might be a bit later. Now he wasn’t sure if she would even see him tonight. “Just fixed the latest crisis,” he texted. “Is it too late to come over? I’ll pick you up, but I need to see you tonight if possible.”

He stared at his phone, waiting for a response during the whole ride down the elevator. He told himself that, if she didn’t text back by the time he reached his car, he would call her. If she didn’t answer…

“Not too late,” she texted back.

He smiled as he hurried over to his car. Another night in Naya’s arms. Damn, how he wanted her! And for more than just one night! Oh, and he wasn’t letting her leave his bed until tomorrow morning. He liked her sleeping next to him too much to forgo that temptation. Besides, he liked waking her up from a sound sleep and making love to her again. Hopefully, she wouldn’t be too tender tomorrow morning. He would love to make love to her with the sunshine streaming in through his bedroom window so that her hair would look like it was on fire. Yeah, he loved that hair!

“Did you eat dinner?” he texted as he whipped his Porsche into the parking lot of the Chinese food place that he preferred. If she’d already eaten, he’d just grab something fast and bring her some dessert. If she hadn’t….

Damn, he liked the idea of feeding her. He liked the idea of eating off of her. Yeah, he liked the idea of tasting her. All of her. Everywhere.

Hell, his body was hard again as he pulled the door of the restaurant open.

“I haven’t, but I can cook you something and bring it over if you are hungry,” she texted back.

He smiled and doubled his order. “I’ll bring dinner,” was his immediate reply. He laughed, thinking about how he was breaking another one of her rules. Thirty-six hours later and he’d worn down two of the five. He was determined to obliterate all of them eventually and force her to accept that there was more to their relationship than just sex. She was an intelligent, beautiful woman and he wanted…more.

And he knew exactly what that “more” was going to be. Marriage terrified Naya, but he didn’t know why. An image of his brothers’ relationships with their lovely ladies popped into his mind, but he knew he couldn’t propose to her. Not yet.

He was in trouble, he thought as he watched the people in the back of the restaurant load up take out containers with his order.
