Between Marriage and Merger - Page 33

“I’m so close,” she mumbled, digging her fingers into his shoulders, her heels into the backs of his thighs, and bucked against him with her hips. He was soaking up her raw beauty, the way the color had rushed to her cheeks, when her chin rose, her mouth fell open, and the orgasm hit her, causing her to gather tight around him.

His own pleasure felt like it was torn from the depths of his belly, relentless waves of tension letting go. Lily gasped and pulled him close, kissing his cheek and neck over and over again. He rolled to his side and they were in each others’ arms, breathless with contentment. He could hardly believe he’d finally had a taste of this woman he’d desired for so long.

She turned to him and nuzzled his chest with her nose. When she lifted her head to look at him, the vivid blue of her eyes kept him in the moment like a jolt of caffeine from a potent cup of coffee. They’d given in. This had really happened.

“That was wonderful,” she murmured, kissing him softly.

“I couldn’t agree more.” He wanted to tell her how long he’d waited for this, for her, and that he’d spent so much time thinking that it would never happen. But that would ruin everything when they had to return to work. Better she think that this was just another Noah tryst. Hopefully she already knew that she meant a lot to him on other levels, most important was friendship.

“I’m wiped, though. I hardly slept last night. It was tough being in the same bed with you, knowing I was supposed to keep my hands to myself.”

“Really?” He was surprised by her admission. He’d assumed that his frustration with physically staying away from each other had been one-sided.

“Yes, Noah. Really. Have you looked at you? I’d be a fool to not want to try something.”

He smiled and pulled her closer. “And why didn’t you?”

“I was waiting for you to give me a sign.”

A sign. Had it been as simple as that all along? If he had met Lily in a bar or at a party, yes. But they’d met at work, she’d become indispensable before he could figure out a way around it and the rest was already determined. Tomorrow, they’d go home, the charade of their fake engagement would be far less necessary, and it would end as soon as the Hannafort deal was signed.

Lily’s breaths were already soft and even. She was falling asleep in his arms and it was a surprisingly pleasant feeling. He kissed her temple, wondering if he should let her sleep for long. Now that he’d done the thing he’d sworn he wouldn’t, he refused to live with regrets. He wanted more of her. If he was going to get her out of his system, and he really wanted to, tonight was his only chance.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Lily woke up to two things—the amazing landscape of Noah’s naked back and a knock at their cabana door.

“Did you order room service?” She was half-awake and more than half-tempted to tell whomever it was to go away. Forget food. She wanted to press up against Noah and get him to go for one last round before they had to leave for New York.

“No. I hope it’s not more champagne. We still have another bottle to drink before we leave.” He rolled toward her, now flat on his back. He absentmindedly scratched his stomach, eyes still sleepy. The sheet was barely covering him. He was so hot she was surprised the bed wasn’t on fire.

Another knock came at the door, this one more insistent. “Do you want me to get it?” he asked.

“I’ll get it. Maybe they have the wrong room. Or it’s housekeeping.” Lily scrambled for some clothes, but all she could find was Noah’s shirt from last night. She threaded her arms into the sleeves and buttoned up lightning fast, then bolted for the door.

Lily was greeted by Charlotte, wagging her fingers.

Oh crap.

“Morning. I think you lost something.” Charlotte held up Lily’s sparkly shoe.

Lily felt the blood drain from her face. So much for keeping this quiet. In the flurry of rushing to bed with Noah, she’d completely forgotten about sending him out again to retrieve her beloved shoe. “Thanks. I was wondering where that went.”

Charlotte bounced her all-knowing eyebrows at Lily. “There are only three things that make a woman leave behind a brand-new designer shoe. A flood, a fire, or a man. So which is it?”

Lily wedged herself into the door opening. “Unless I missed something, I don’t think there were any natural disasters last night.” Woman-made disasters, yes.

“Nice shirt, by the way. It looks better on you than Noah.”

That was impossible, but there was no use arguing the point. Plus, if there had been any doubt that Charlotte knew exactly what had happened last night, it was gone now. “Somebody was pounding on the door. I had to answer it wearing something.”
