My Fake Fling - Page 143

REESE

Iflipped through one account after another in search of anything that would hint at a transfer of property. I saw nothing that stood out. This was Clark’s thing. I zipped the file, added a note, and sent it to him. There wasn’t much more I could do, which made this whole thing worse. I felt so damn useless.

There was a soft knock on my office door. “Reese?”

“What’s up, babe?”

“There is someone here to see you,” she said.

“Who?”

“Your brother, asshole,” Clark said and stepped behind her.

“Clark!” I jumped to my feet and looked past him. “Is Dad here?”

The look on Thea’s face told me he wasn’t. Disappointment weighed heavily on me. I sank back into the chair. Clark sat down on the couch along the wall. “He’s not,” Clark answered.

“Can I get you guys something to drink?” Thea asked.

“No thanks,” we both answered at the same time.

“I’ll be in the kitchen,” she said and quietly closed the door.

I stared at Clark in an attempt to read his expression. My thoughts were right. He did know something. There was something wrong. He wouldn’t have shown up in person to tell me he didn’t know anything.

“What the hell?” I asked. “Why are you in town? What’s wrong?”

“I know where Dad is,” he said.

My initial reaction was relief. He found him. I could relax. It was over. Then I realized he wasn’t relieved. In fact, he looked very worried. “Why do I get the feeling that’s not a good thing?” I asked.

“It’s not a good thing,” he said.

I swallowed my fear. “What?” I asked. “Tell me.”

“I believe he’s in Singapore.”

I frowned and shook my head. “On vacation?”

“No.”

“Then why do you think he’s in Singapore?” I asked. “He doesn’t have any business dealings there. We did a deal there like two years ago. He hasn’t done much overseas stuff in a while. I doubt he’s in Singapore.”

“It wasn’t really a suggestion,” he said.

“What does that mean?”

“He’s in Singapore,” he said firmly.

I cocked my head to the side. “You know for certain.”

“Yes.”

I had to let the word sink in and catch my breath. “Is he alive?”

He stared directly at me with eyes that looked so much like my own. “I can’t say for sure, but they did demand a ransom.”

My heart stopped. Then picked up at double the normal rate. “A ransom. Someone reached out to you?”
