I leaned back when our server returned with our food. He set the bowls of soup beside us and the accompanying sandwiches, as well as a stack of napkins. “Do you two need anything else?”
Donna and I shook our heads and he left us to our meals.
I spooned soup into my mouth and tried to stop my thoughts from running rampant.
“Do you want to know what I really think?” Donna asked.
I eyed her as I blew on the mouthful of soup sitting on my spoon. “So long as the words ‘sugar’ and ‘daddy’ don’t come out of your mouth again.”
She smiled. “No, I can be serious for once. I think you’re a woman who leads with her heart, Gabi. And on that note, I think you’re overlooking the reason why you really went to him last night. He didn’t seek you out. You sought him out. You wanted him. You’re not a casual hookup kind of girl. Maybe you’re crushing on him. Maybe there’s more to this than you think.”
“No way.”
“Why not?”
“Because… because…” Shit. Because why? Because I said so?
“Exactly,” Donna said. “People start relationships in unconventional ways all the time. If you guys are both into each other, what’s stopping you from seeing where it could lead? I think you should go for it.”
Go for it? With my boss? That sounded insane.
But Ainsley had done it, and now she and my brother were getting married soon.
