Balanced and Tied (Marshals 5) - Page 73

“They’re lovely.”

“Thank you.”

“What’s with the Uggs?”

“My feet were cold.”

“Did they come sparkly like that?”

“No,” she said cheerfully, “I had them custom made.”

“The butterflies are a nice touch.”

“Thanks.”

“I’ve never seen them in lime green or, as I said, the glitter.”

“They’re groovy,” she said matter-of-factly, “but could we table the discussion about my footwear until after we eat?”

“Yes. But I’m buying, and I don’t wanna argue about it like last time.”

She lifted the sweatshirt so I could see that her Louis Vuitton cross-body bag was underneath. “I invited you. I’m paying. What am I, a heathen?”

“That’s the bag you got when I got my rolling suitcase.”

She grinned at me. “It is, though I have two more now. I got a supercute hobo bag from there last week.”

At the table, which I insisted should be all the way in the rear of the building, where we could sit side by side with our backs to the wall, Luna ordered a Bloody Mary, I got a mimosa, and then she turned to look at me.

“Before we discuss what happened yesterday, I want to talk to you about something I’m planning on doing during our off-season this year, and I’d like your help with it.”

“What do you mean, during the off-season?”

“What do you mean what do I mean? May, June, July. Our off-season. Are you all right?”

I stared at her. “No. I dunno.”

She sighed deeply. “You’re not sure how to feel either.”

“Is it fucked up for you?”

“Well, yeah. I mean”—she shrugged—“it’s Senan, right? If, heaven forbid, it was you or Maven, I’d be a wreck. I’d be broken.”

I nodded quickly.

“I just…don’t know how to feel.”

“Same,” I agreed and then took a breath. “Okay, so, you were saying?”

“This year for our off-season, instead of us all jetting off to different corners of the globe, I’d like us to stay here and give something back to our community.”

“In what way?”

She smiled big. “I would like the three of us to host spring-slash-summer intensives with inner-city kids.”

I knew her well, and between the smile I was getting and the flashing brownish-hazel eyes, it was clear what she’d done. “You’ve already committed to this, haven’t you?”

She bit her bottom lip.
