Balanced and Tied (Marshals 5) - Page 57

“Maybe,” he allowed. “Her first text did say that I should take care of you.”

“You see? That’s very thoughtful of her.”

“It is, and I thanked her. Now she’s just wanting an update on you, which I told her I would give her tomorrow. She has to wait.”

“Since she usually doesn’t, I’m sure that’s why your phone is pinging away.”

“Yeah, I don’t care,” he admitted. “Tell me who you think would want to kill Senan.”

“I was kidding before. People don’t get murdered for being douchebags. So honestly, I have no idea.”

“Well, they’re going through his phone and computer now, so we’ll see what comes of that.”

“Are they searching his home and dressing room as well?”

“Yes. All that’s being done.” He glanced over at me, smiled, and then turned back to the road. “Do you thinkSwan Lakeis still a go?”

“I would think so. Like Tildham alluded to, I can imagine Lincoln Palmer putting it together now as an homage to Senan.”

“That’s so self-serving.”

“It’ll be interesting to see who he’ll have in it now.”

“Won’t you be in it?”

“I don’t know. Right before Senan was killed, he told me there wasn’t a spot for me in Lincoln’s ballet.”

“But you were supposed to be the evil magician.”

I smiled at him as he turned into the garage of his building. “I love that you listen to me and remember what I said.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

I shrugged. “Not everyone would.”

“The things that impress you are so small.”

“The things that impress me impress everyone,” I assured him. “I feel valued.”

“Because you are.”

I got choked up over that and sat there silently, watching him use the fob at the gate. Like all of them, it took a moment to rise.

“So when Senan told you you were out of Palmer’s ballet, you must have gone to confront the great choreographer. What happened?”

“How did you know I—”

He scoffed. “Like you would take that shit lying down.”

“Very true,” I admitted.

“And?”

I explained what Lincoln had said about his plans to rework the ballet and how upset Delon was because tickets had been sold based on the reverseSwan Lakeof a princess instead of a prince.

“He’s putting Delon in a terrible spot.”

“I agree. He should have told him in the beginning that he had certain ideas for the production. However he planned it would be okay, but you can’t change it once the press releases have been finalized. The ticket-buying public needs to know what they’re getting.”
