The Billionaire Player (In Too Deep) - Page 20

“What are you doing?” I asked, my voice as sharp as the crack of a whip as I scooted as far away from him as I could get.

A crease appeared between his brows and his lips parted, but no sound came out. Taken aback, he moved a bit farther away from me too, then gestured to my body. “I’m sorry. I thought it was what you wanted. Women who get into the water with me wearing something like that are usually looking for things to go further.”

What?My eyebrows climbed higher on my forehead as I stared at him, my blinks longer than they should’ve been as I tried to wrap my head around what he’d just said. “Are you serious? Do you honestly think that just because I wore this bikini, I wanted to fuck you?”

“Don’t you?” he asked, but he seemed more confused than anything else.

Pissed off, I shook my head and got out. I grabbed one of the towels and wrapped it snugly around me. “This was a bad idea.”

“Why else would you put on something as sexy as that?”

“Because it’s the only suit I brought,” I snapped. “Sure, I wanted to look good, but not because I wanted you to make a move on me. Just… have you seen yourself recently?”

“Well, yeah.” He dragged both hands through his hair, slicking it back as he tipped his head to look up at me. “That’s kind of my point. Things have been going well all day. We came out to the hot tub and you were wearing that.” He shrugged. “Is it not what you want?”

Regardless of what had just happened, I wasn’t afraid of him. I was just mad that he’d simply assumed that the act of putting on a bikini was as good as asking for sex. It was ridiculous.

“No, Tanner. It’s not what I want,” I said firmly. “Do you really think all women have sex on their minds whenever they’re alone with you?”

“Uh, yes? I used to be a professional baseball player who is now publicly known to be a billionaire. Plus, I’m not bad on the eyes, so yes. I’m used to women wanting to get in bed with me.”

“That might be true, but I’m not one of them.”

He arched a brow at me. “Really? Because you’ve clearly had sex on the brain all day. You kept bringing it up.”

“No, everything I said came out wrong because I’m nervous. I thought you said you understood what I meant. In fact, the only reason it came up at all was because I wanted to make sure we were on the same page about that not being what we were here for.”

He scrubbed his palms over his jaw, repeatedly shaking his head. “I’m sorry, okay? It’s just… you really don’t want me?”

I rolled my eyes, a lethal combination of frustration and irritation doing a messed-up dance inside me. “I’m going to bed.”

Never mind. Scratch everything I thought previously about him not being an arrogant ass. I mean, really.

After giving myself a quick wipe-down once I reached the doors to make sure I wouldn’t be leaving puddles on the expensive floors that I’d never be able to afford to replace, I stormed inside.

As I headed up the stairs though, I paused when I caught a glimpse of him through the window. He was sitting alone in the hot tub now, his head in his hands.

A tiny stab of guilt pricked at my gut. The sight of him like that was making me feel a little bit bad. That had been a pretty severe reaction considering that nothing had actually happened and he’d stopped as soon as I’d pulled back, but maybe it was best to just go home in the morning.

On the other hand, I’d been having a good time with him until then. I didn’t know if there was any coming back from what had just happened, but as I continued up the stairs, I decided to see how I felt tomorrow.

Maybe he is a bit more arrogant than I thought, but I don’t think he meant any harm by it.I groaned, my mind split in two over the whole incident. I didn’t know what I was going to do just yet, but hopefully, the answer would come to me in the light of a brand new day.
