Hand in hand, we reach the reception desk, and Vienna asks for Lukas.
“Lukas Spencer is in surgery. But you can go to the third floor waiting room, where other family and friends are waiting.”
My pulse shoots up at the mention of surgery.
God, you cannot give Lukas more pain than he’s already endured.
As much as I’ve tried to make him feel like family, he knows he’s an outsider. There isn’t a place in this world where he belongs.
There’s no one who’s his completely.
This cannot be the fucking end of his story.
The elevator stops, and I spot Connor King, Lukas’ boss. Sitting on his wheelchair, Connor is speaking to a girl. I spot other members of King’s Security and my brothers, but everyone is focused on Connor’s conversation with the girl.
Before Vienna and I can say hello, two doctors in scrubs rush out.
“Surgery was successful. Lukas Spencer is out of danger.”
Vienna squeezes my hand, and I look down and pull her closer before Zach and Zander walk up to us.
“Thank fuck.” There’s a grim line on Zander’s face.
“He’ll be ok-kay.” I press my brother’s bunched shoulder.
“He better be, because I need answers.”
“Zander! Not now.” Zach speaks under his breath, but there’s a tightness on his face.
Zander rushes out, and my hand on his shoulder drops. Zach follows him fast.
For a second, I’m confused whether to follow my brothers or wait in the waiting area. At the last second, I jerk my head toward my brothers marching toward the elevator. “Come on.”
Why is Zander so agitated?
“Wh-what happened?” I find Zander pacing back and forth in the parking lot.
“We used to think of him as our fourth brother.” Zach’s fists clench, but his words don’t clear my cloud of confusion.
“Will s-someone tell me wh-what the heck happened and why we’re here and not in the w-waiting room?”
Zander shoots me a quick glance before he rolls his shoulder. “Lukas doesn’t hide anything from you, right?”
I nod.
“So you know he’s married.”
“Mar-rried? What the fuck are you t-talking about?”
“That girl in the waiting room. Her name is Autumn Spencer. And she is Lukas’ fucking wife.”
