Saving Vienna - Page 77

How often do we forget this isn’t real?

But before he can give me an explanation, I reply, “I’d love to celebrate our first anniversary in Vienna.”

I’m sitting in the passenger seat while Zane makes calls to God knows who, arranging a private plane. In contrast to his excitement, I struggle to get a hold of my emotions.

What should I focus on?

The upcoming surgery that fills me with unbridled dread every time I try to think about it?

The new information about anemia and the unknown troubles it’ll bring along?

Or my husband, who’s trying to make up for something he didn’t do? He’s determined to fulfill the vow he made on our fake wedding.

“Ever-rything’s arranged. Did you t-text Ivy and Joe?”

I nod.

Joe’s yes was laced with mild irritation over the fact that he has to find a temp barista on such short notice. But he did wish me a happy time.

Ivy’s texts are filling my inbox faster than a forest fire. I told her I’d reply as soon as I’ve sorted out my feelings. But her name wouldn’t be Ivy Hart if she listened.

We’re waiting for Zander on the porch, who’s coming to take Mystery and Tassels with him while we’re away.

A shudder runs through me as I close my eyes. I’m going to Vienna, finally, and with no one but Zane. A man who’ll do anything to see me happy. For the first time in the past two days, I don’t feel the crushing heaviness inside.

I’m going to enjoy this time, make the most of it. My honeymoon.

“Ar-re you okay?” Zane tugs on my hand, and when I open my eyes, there’s worry dancing on his handsome face.

“I’m perfect. Better than before.”

A huge grin replaces the frown, squeezing my heart tight.

“You packed everyth-thing? Your camera, your id-dea notebook?” Zane cocks his head toward my luggage.

“Are you seriously telling me that you won’t buy me a second camera if I forget this one here?” I pat the top of my bag, where the camera is safely secured.

Zane’s eyebrows shoot up as if he didn’t expect such a response.

“I’d buy th-the whole damn electr-ronics store, if that makes you happy.”

Oh, Zane. My heart starts to rattle.

But the moment is quickly broken by the flashing lights of an oncoming vehicle.

Zander strolls out of his car, and I notice two new dog beds on the back seat, along with a huge shopping bag from the local pet store.

“You didn’t have to buy anything, Zander. They have everything.” I shift on my feet, suddenly feeling guilty for the unnecessary expense.

“I have strict instructions from Rose and Alex that we’re hosting some very special guests. Everything needs to be perfect. They’re busy finding the best place for your kids to sleep tonight.”

My throat chokes with every word Zander says. I can’t believe my luck. I finally found a family that’ll bend over backwards to make others happy, and I’m deceiving them all, shattering their trust into a million pieces.

I throw my arms around Zander and hug him tight. “Thank you so much.”
