Saving Vienna - Page 68

“Yes, but—”

“W-wait.” He raises a finger and then gets up. Zane turns around and opens one of the nearby cupboards. He looks back at me with a grin on his lips before stepping away from whatever he’s showing me.

“You have a microwave in your office?” My jaw goes slack when Zane opens the lower cupboard.

“And a fr-ridge.”

The mini fridge is filled with water bottles, beer, and chocolates.

“Why? Please don’t tell me you spend your nights in this office.” I settle back in my seat as Zane removes the plastic lid before placing our to-go cups in the microwave. “As much as I like this rustic, moody office, your bed is the most comfortable thing in the whole world.”

Zane’s back is still facing me when he says in a low voice, “You’re fr-ree to claim a half of my bed anyt-time.”

“Don’t tempt me, or you’ll really find me every night in your bed.” I know we’re probably playing with fire here, but it’s so rare for Zane to show this playful side of his personality. I can’t for the love of God believe that this hunk of a man, who is like a perfect mix of sensual and adorable, is shy.

Zane hands me a cup before settling back on his chair. After taking a sip, he cocks his head toward the camera bag. “How’s everyth-thing?”

I place my cup down and grab the camera. Removing the lens cover, I point it toward Zane and take a shot.

He brings the cup lower from his lips. There’s a ghost of a smile and a touch of embarrassment on his face. “I th-thought this w-was for f-food.”

I’ve noticed on the rare moments when Zane isn’t his usually composed self, he stutters more than usual. Somehow the knowledge that I’ve made him nervous gives me too much power.

“You’re no less tempting.” I smirk before taking continuous shots of him. Zane continues to grin, and a slight pink color rises up his cheekbones just above the five o’clock shadow.

God, his coyness will someday kill me.

Before Zane, I didn’t know that shy men could be so damn sexy.

“Wh-what’re you th-thinking?” he asks.

I shake my head before placing the camera back onto the table. I’m still racking my brain, trying to find a fitting excuse when Zane’s phone rings.

Thank God. I’m saved by the bell.

I lean back in my chair. His attention being elsewhere gives me the perfect excuse to blatantly gawk at him. And that’s how I notice when the smile on his face drops in a flash as he reads whatever is displayed on his phone screen.

But when his gaze locks with mine, there’s a mix of concern and worry before he clears his throat, and I know what it is.

“It’s the hospital. Isn’t it?” I ask.

I’ve tried not to think about the results of my biopsy. But I guess they’re ready at the hospital.

Zane slowly nods his head. “Th-they want us to come in t-tomorrow.”

ZANE

I’ve never been more nervous than right in this moment. Vienna is sitting next to me in the hospital waiting room. As there is some maintenance work going on at the obstetrics department waiting room on the same floor, there are quite a few pregnant ladies entering and leaving while we wait.

The door opens and I look up expectantly, hoping it’s finally our turn, but a couple walks in. A heavily pregnant woman greets us with a hello and gently slides into the empty chair next to Vienna.

“Let me check wh-what’s taking s-so long.” I leave the crowded waiting room and am surprised to find Mary in the corridor.

“Mr. Teager, how are you doing?”

“I’m very well. Th-thank you. How ar-re you and your grands-son?”
