The Cowboy and His Billionaire - Page 13

Afteradaywith no screen time, while out driving around with Brice yesterday, I had to convince him to let me use his computer for a meeting. I felt much better and I figured thirty minutes on the computer wouldn't be a big deal. Though I promised to take it easy the rest of the day.

I get ready to go to the kitchen for breakfast, which takes twice as long as normal while trying to balance on one foot. Maggie's clothes fit perfectly, and she has a very relaxed style. She included mostly loose clothes in case of a size difference. Today's choice? The beautiful blue jewel-toned maxi dress. It's comfortable and would look great on camera.

When I go into the kitchen, I find Brice making breakfast already. I feel bad he's been the one doing all the cooking. As soon as I’m able, I plan to cook at least one meal for him.

"Good morning. How are you feeling?" he asks without even turning around.

"Much better since I didn't have some crazy person waking me up at two a.m," I joke with him.

"Good. I made just plain eggs and bacon for breakfast today. Mom is thrilled you’re here because her chickens are producing more eggs than she expected."

"She could sell them. Farm fresh eggs go for a pretty penny in Dallas."

"City Girl, this ain't Dallas. Around here everyone has access to farm-fresh eggs."

"Well, I was hoping to make you a deal. I know you say no screen time, but there is a meeting I really need to call into if you’ll let me borrow your computer. Thirty minutes tops, then I’ll stay off the electronics for the rest of the day."

He finally looks back over his shoulder at me, a look of concern on his face. But he says nothing as he plates up the food, and then walks to the living room.

I almost ask if he heard me until he comes back and pulls a chair around to sit next to me.

He shines his little pencil light in my eyes and has me follow his finger around.

"You’re looking much better. Thirty minutes, that’s it. Since it’s right here, I can keep an eye on you."

"Deal."I feel like a kid who just negotiated the terms she wanted with her parents.

We sit and eat in silence before curiosity gets the better of me and I have to break it."So, what are the plans after my meeting?"

"Well, I was thinking we could sit on the back porch for a while. I need to do some catch-up reading on some patient files and there are plenty of books in my office for you to read. There are even a few romance books from when my parents stayed here when they were remodeling their kitchen."

"Or you just don't want to admit you secretly read romances?" I tease him with the ease of two people who have known each other a lot longer than just a few days.

"Growing up, it was Mom who had all these romance novels in the house. But the only thing Dad read was medical journals, so I’ve read my fair share, I will admit."

That gives me a good laugh.

After breakfast, I offer to help with the dishes, but he pushes me away.

"Go get ready for your meeting. I’ll get my laptop set up at the table for you."

"Thank you."

I go to the guest room I’ve been staying in and grab what little makeup I have in my purse. I always keep an emergency stash of eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick for touch-ups, so that will have to do. Wonder what the board would think if I used one of those fancy social media filters in place of makeup?

I chuckle to myself on that one. Seeing how most of the board are my father's age, I'm sure it wouldn't be looked upon too highly. Gary might like it. He's closer to my age and had a crush on me, but thankfully after I said I was concentrating on my job, he has let it be.

Since I have no hair products, I do the best I can, pulling the front of my hair around to the side so it hides the little cut there. Then I put it into a side ponytail. Giving it a little twist before securing it, I decide it will have to do. It will keep the hair out of my eyes, and it's close enough to how I wear it at work.

Well, this is the best it's going to get.

Going to the dining room, I find Brice there with a laptop set up. He’s at the table reading from a tablet, and he’s even thought to set me up so my back is to a wall instead of the kitchen or something else that could cause questions.

"Thank you for this."

"You're welcome. Want something to drink before you log in?" he asks.
