Surrendering Series Box Set - Page 419

“I’ll read them when I get home. I want to be involved in this. I mean, as involved as you’ll let me be,” he said with a chuckle. There were some things I was going to draw the line on, but most of it I was fine with him knowing about.

“Sounds good. Hey,” I said.

“What?”

“We’re going to be parents.” We could start thinking about cribs and car seats and names and all of those good things.

“I know. I still can’t believe it. I’ll see you in a little while, Sunshine.” I couldn’t help but smile.

“Okay. Love you.”

“I love you. And BG. Bye.” We hung up and I went outside to hail a cab to take me back to the office.

“How did it go?” Lilia asked when I got back.

“Good. It’s official, so it’s definitely happening,” I said. She clapped her hands together.

“Oh, I’m so excited for you,” she whispered as Mr. Smith, our head of accounting went by and said hello to me.

“Thanks. I think after my next appointment we’ll go public since we’ll have the ultrasound picture. Right now it’s microscopic and doesn’t resemble a human being very much. No offense,” I said the last part to BG.

“That is so cute. You’re already talking to it,” Lilia said and I blushed. That was probably weird, talking to my fetus. I didn’t care. It felt natural to talk to BG, even now.

“No idea if it can hear me, but soon it will and they say it’s good for your baby to get to know your voice.” I shrugged and then Lilia’s phone rang so I went back into my office to catch up on what I’d missed while I was at the doctor’s.

“Hey, so can we stop at the pharmacy? They called in my prescription and it should be ready by now,” I said when Lucah came up at five.

“Sounds good,” he said, giving me a kiss. “Hey.”

“What?” I said.

“We’re getting married in three days.” With all the baby craziness, I’d almost forgotten about the wedding. Almost.

“I know. Don’t forget we have to pick up the marriage license tomorrow,” I said, tapping him on the chest to remind him. He gave me a little salute.

“That’s not something I’m going to forget.” Probably not. We couldn’t get married without it. Well, we could but it wouldn’t be all legal-like.

“See you tomorrow,” Lilia said, gathering her things and shutting down her computer.

“Bye,” we both said in unison. I made a face.

“Ugh, I don’t want to become one of those weird couples that finishes each other sentences and starts dressing alike. I do not want that to happen,” I said. He slung his arm around my shoulders.

“Don’t worry, Sunshine. I won’t let that happen to us. You’re too much of an individual.” Somehow that didn’t sound like a compliment, but I was too tired to argue with him about it.

Twenty-Two

Friday at work I was a nervous wreck. Lilia forced me to get out of the office and go to lunch with her, but I couldn’t eat a thing.

“I should have taken today off. I don’t think I’ve gotten one thing done,” I said as I poked at my salad. My head was too full of all the things that could go wrong tomorrow and the fact that I wasn’t going to see Lucah tonight. I wasn’t that superstitious, but for some reason he’d wanted to follow that tradition. That had led us to be extremely late for work this morning, but I didn’t think anyone noticed.

“It’s okay. You’re allowed,” she said.

“I’m also sick because of BG. It’s just a lot to take right now,” I said with a weak smile. Tonight the whole wedding party was heading over to the wedding location and then my parents’ house for the rehearsal dinner. Since that was where we’d be getting ready the next day before heading over to the actual wedding, it made sense. I’d thought about breaking the “no seeing the bride on the night before the wedding” rule, but Dad had said he would sleep in the hallway to prevent that from happening.
