Surrendering Series Box Set - Page 359

Lucah snorted.

“Do you doubt my ability to get up before you?”

“No. I wouldn’t doubt your ability to do anything. Whether you want to or not is what I doubt.” That was true. I pretty much hated mornings. The only good things about mornings were coffee and strawberry donuts and wakeup sex.

“Whatever. I could do it,” I said, finishing my toast and adding ketchup to my eggs.

We finished our breakfast and went downstairs to explore. I showed Lucah around and told him a few of the sillier stories from when I was younger. He got a kick out of it, as well as looking at some of the awful pictures of me that my parents insisted on putting on the walls and on the mantle.

“It’s only fair,” he said. It was true that I’d seen plenty of the childhood pictures he had in his album. I grumbled, but let him have his fun.

I took him out to the fire pit and then down to the dock again. It was so strange to just… sit. Not have to worry about phone calls and emails and all that chatter that accompany modern life. I waved a bug away and smiled at Lucah. He squinted in the sun and gazed out across the still water. Soon it would be filled with boats and jet skis and people swimming, but it was deserted now.

“It’s really beautiful,” Lucah said.

“Yeah. It’s so different from the city. I keep expecting to hear a horn honk or hear a bunch of people, but not out here. We can come more often if you want. Maybe we could take a whole week this summer. You could borrow one of Dad’s fishing poles and I can read while you catch our dinner.” I wasn’t a fan of fishing. I’d done it with Dad when I was younger, but it wasn’t my favorite activity.

“We should get a rowboat,” he said with certainty.

“Yeah?” I said.

“Yeah.” I liked the idea of that.

We both sat with our thoughts for a while and then my phone rang. I might have enjoyed the freedom from technology, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to take my phone with me.

Lucah glared at me, but I looked at the screen to see who was calling. Sloane. She was probably just bored. I didn’t know why she would call me instead of sending a text, but she was always like that.

“Sloane,” I said in explanation as I held up my phone. He also rolled his eyes as I put my phone back in my pocket.

It started to get a little chilly when the sun went behind the clouds, so we went back inside and started cleaning. We made sandwiches for lunch and then went out to watch the sun go down and sit around the fire pit. Lucah brought out his guitar and started to sing.

I had another one of those visions of our potential future. I saw other people sitting around this fire with us. Sloane and Ryder and Tate and April and the girls, yes, but also that little redheaded girl I’d imagined and a little boy as well.

A boy. I’d love to see Lucah with a little boy. Maybe that child could have blonde hair like mine, but I’d want him to have Lucah’s eyes. He’d probably be quiet. Introverted, but deep. I blinked and shoved the image aside as Lucah asked me what song I wanted to hear next.

I had to scramble to think of something. “All About That Bass” was the first thing that popped into my head and it was what came out of my mouth. Lucah laughed and then started picking out chords. Even though it was a new song for him, he’d heard me (and Sloane) sing it enough that he could figure it out. He didn’t know all the lyrics, so I helped him fill in, even though my voice wasn’t anywhere near as good as his.

When we were done, we were both laughing.

“I can’t believe I did that,” he said, shaking his head.

“Hey, it’s a good song. And you are a fan of my bass, soo…”

“That I am, Sunshine. That I am.”

After a few more songs we roasted hot dogs and then had s’mores. I remembered the first time I’d had dinner with Lucah and he’d told me that if I didn’t like s’mores, then I should just leave. He was so serious about it.

“This is the best,” he said, his mouth covered in melted marshmallow and chocolate. He looked good enough to eat, so I pulled him close and licked him clean.

“Mmm,” he said, licking his lips. “You taste so good.”

The air shifted and I climbed onto his lap.

“I want s’more of you,” he said and the line was so cheesy that I laughed.
