Unbroken 2 - Page 120

“So, another three and you have her?”

“Mm.”

She went quiet for a moment. “This can’t be healthy, Hunt.”

He knocked his head back, relaxing his neck now. “I know.”

“Have you seen her in that time?”

“Once.”

“Why just once?”

“Leo took her to some island or some shit.” He paused then. “I didn’t see her before that, either, because...”

Because he didn’t trust himself.

He would steal her from Leo.

He would not let her go, either.

And then he would never be able to forgive himself, but then again…could he live with that?

Hunter didn’t want to talk about it or fuel those thoughts. He felt his heart thump a little harder just mentioning it. He’d expected Leo to holiday with her, but knowing she’d be gone for two months was not part of the fucking plan. Then again, Hunter liked the thought of her happy. He imagined her smiling under the hot sun, walking the white sandy beaches with the glittering ocean at her feet. Leo was giving her everything. Hunter’s lips twisted as he thought of what he’d given her: a small bedroom in a clubhouse filled with bikers.

“Are you going away again?” she then asked, likely sensing his aversion to the topic.

“Tomorrow.”

“For how long?”

“A couple weeks.”

“What the hell? Is Miles taking you to the edge of the world?”

“And beyond.”

She let out an exasperated sigh. “How can you stand it?”

“I don’t mind.”

“You’re crazy.”

She didn’t get it though. The longer his stints on the road were, the faster time moved. He was itching to get these months over with. He needed Skye in his fucking bed, wearing his fucking patch. He was feeling antsy, that savage within him tossing and turning for her touch. She was his—goddammit, this was not going to work—

“I can’t believe how big you’re getting,” she grumbled next, cutting through his manic thoughts. “Why won’t you stop?”

Cracking one eye open to look at her, he grinned. “Not my fault, you know.”

“I’m five foot nothing, and Roy comes up to your shoulder—”

“Everyone comes up to my shoulder.”

“You look like a spooky grim reaper in all that black, shoulders heaving and wide.”

He chuckled. “What do you want me to do about it?”

“Stop growing,” she teased.
