Unbroken 2 - Page 101

“Sharing a woman, Hunt, is not an arrangement—it’s fucking madness.”

“Yeah.”

“There are other girls, Hunt—”

“They’re notSkye,” he retorted.

Jesse appeared like he was trying to understand. “You’re infatuated with her.”

“Is that a question?”

“No, but I’ll ask one: what’s it like to love one person so hard?”

Hunter blinked slowly, gritting his teeth as he answered honestly, “It’s heaven and it’s hell.”

“Is the heaven worth the hell?”

“It’s worth a thousand hells.”

Jesse stiffened a nod, thinking. “Look, I’ll tell you what I know, alright?”

“Everything?”

He looked at him closely. “Everything I know.”

That was all he needed to hear.

Hunter strode off, and he should have been happy to get back on the Road. He needed that tranquillity, especially now. But leaving town for an uncertain time felt all wrong. He wanted to go to his room, bury his face in the sheets and smell Skye all around him.

The crazy part of him wanted to take her the fuck back.

Six months.

Six fucking months of this cold misery?

How did Leo do it?

Hunter climbed over his bike, gritting back angry curses.

He felt sharp fury in his body—

“I let you go,” he gritted to himself. “I let you the fuck go, Skye…”

What was the matter with him?

She was his just hours ago. She was in his arms, and he was inside her. He fucked her ruthlessly, enjoying her pained cries, the way she met every harsh thrust with her own. She swallowed his cock like it was made for her.

He couldn’t survive six fucking months of this—no fucking way.

There had to be another way.

For now, he had to pull back. He had to shut off. He had to fortify his heart and just make sure it thumped long enough for her return.

“You okay?” Miles solemnly asked, studying him.

“No,” Hunter admitted, clenching his jaw.

As if echoing his thoughts, Miles growled, “You shouldn’t have let her go.”

Hunter just stared at him, feeling his chest constrict. “I had no choice.”

But Miles just shook his head. “You did. You had a fucking choice, and you let her walk.”

“You don’t know what you’re saying—”

“I do.” Miles gritted his teeth and leaned from his bike over to Hunter’s. He stared him dead in the eyes and said, “You and me, we aren’t people. We don’t fit in with the others. We don’t play nice. We work better when we’re surviving. We’re fucking wild, aren’t we? We’re animals. Predators on the Road where we fucking belong. Predators who take. We fucking take, Hunt. What we want—we take. When we’re hungry—we feed. When we want to fuck—we fuck. When we hurt—we fucking destroy. No questions asked. That’s the rules of the jungle. You slip up once, you turn the other cheek, you falter or show weakness, and another predator bigger and smarter will replace you.” Pulling back, he delivered the final blow. “If she doesn’t come back one day, that’s on you to live with. It’ll be your fault.”

Without waiting for a response, Miles took off, and as Hunter watched him grow smaller, he thought to himself:what the fuck have I done?

He threw his helmet on, revved his bike, and took off down the road.
