Unbroken 2 - Page 83

Twenty-Four

Hunter

Apparently, everything had gone to fucking shit.

“She’s refusing to move,” Jesse had said earlier on the phone. “She’s locked inside your room, man. I don’t know how to get her out. Your mom’s saying she’s not in a good place.”

Hunter knew what Skye was doing: self-loathing and turning against the world more and more. Skye retreated inside herself to build walls, and knocking those walls down was hard as fuck once they were up.

He should go to that motherfucker and cut that fucking mouth off that fucking face. Kurt and his giant flapping mouth; he was always spewing shit he didn’t know about. Hunter wished he’d been there to know just what he said to make Skye flee.

Sissy cunt was probably taking refuge at a bar around town to avoid Hunter’s wrath.

It was dark when Hunter parked the Harley and jumped off. He stormed down the trail, eyeing Skye’s place real quick to be sure Kurt wasn’t standing around. Fucker would get the snot beat out of him. Bones, Hunter wanted to break his fucking bones.

Not a single light was on as he passed by, making him wonder if Skye’s Mom was sitting in the dark to avoid him.

He saw the blinds of other trailers flutter as he walked past. Eyes and ears everywhere, watching, always watching.

He was angry.

He felt that rage zipping along his bloodstream, screaming to be let out.

But he didn’t want to unleash the savage in him. Not right now. Not while Skye was in a state.

Fuck, if she was in a really bad state, how was he going to make it better?

This wasn’t like before. This wasn’t a spat that he could rectify with a hard fuck. This was Skye about to spiral into a dark hole, and he needed help to pull her out before she fell in too deep.

For a split second, he considered calling for Leo. He would know what to do—

Hunter entered his home, aware of the heavy silence within. He immediately found Roy standing in the kitchen with Kayla. They swung their gazes at him as Jesse jumped off the couch and went to him.

“Hey,” he said in a hushed tone. “You came fast.”

Hunter didn’t tell him that he pretty much ditched Miles at a drop off and came rushing over. “Is she still in my room?”

Jesse nodded. “Yeah.”

Hunter turned to Roy. “I’ll need space.”

Roy nodded. “Already got your mom’s bag packed for the night. She was ‘bout to leave with me when Skye dropped in.”

Kayla looked concernedly at Hunter. “It’s awful quiet in that room, Hunt. Maybe she just wants to be on her own.”

“She doesn’t want to be on her own,” Hunter simply returned.

He wasn’t about to explain, either.

Kayla simply nodded in response as Roy led her out of the room, a bag in his free hand. Despite the tension, Roy seemed excited. His lips flinched up when he glanced down at petite Kayla, obviously over the moon that she was actually going to be staying at his place. Hunter was just as shocked about it. Kayla, on the other hand, seemed a little reserved, a mixture of tension and excitement in her eyes as she looked back at Roy, smiling lightly.

Roy was winning her over slowly.

She was going to let him in.

And he was so pathetically in love with her—

Hunter turned away, his heart swelling at the sight of his mother like this. She fucking deserved it.
