Unbroken 2 - Page 67

“Did he know?”

I glanced down at my nails, keeping my voice calm. “Yes.”

“Does hestillthink you’re at Leo’s?”

I didn’t answer.

I got what he was implying.

Like I was too ashamed to tell Kurt I was with the boy he had loathed my entire life, but it wasn’t Hunter I didn’t want him knowing about. It was that this place was known for its violence. The kind of violence that hit close to home. I was next door with Leo when the bikers got shot up, and I narrowly missed those damn bullets.

“Skye,” he prodded, but there was ice in his tone.

I finally looked up. We stared at each other for a couple tense moments, saying nothing. Finally, he pointed that smoke at me, commanding, “You’re going to fucking tell him.”

I stood up. “I have to get back to work—”

“Tell me you will.”

Despite feeling irked, I gave him a sweet smile. “I’ll tell him whatever the hell I wanna tell him, Hunt.”

Definitely not the response he wanted. His jaw tensed. “Skye,” he said in warning as I turned away and began walking to the bar. Peeved, I resumed my shift as he watched on, looking equally pissed.

“Drama in paradise?” joked Faden as I dropped a bottle of beer in front of him. Dude needed to get cut off after this—a drunk Faden was never fun to deal with, and his cough was getting worse.

“I’m fantastic,” I returned in a chipper voice.

He cackled, hacked, and cackled some more as I spun around to the jerk sitting next to him, raising my brows in question. Miles stared back, saying absolutely nothing. Okay, fucker didn’t want to be served. I was so close to flipping him off, but then he raised his hand and motioned Kara to take his order instead.Un-fucking-believable.Feeling unusually shitty, I raised a hand at Kara, halting her in her steps as I coolly regarded Miles and said, “I can take your order just fine.”

He ignored me, whistling this time for Kara to come closer. She hesitantly did. “Can I get you anything, Miles?” she asked in a small voice.

“No,” I cut in suddenly, smiling brightly at her. “I’ll be taking his order, hon.” Looking back at him, I narrowed my eyes, demanding in a hard tone, “What can I get you, Miles?”

Miles smirked, unbothered. “I want Kara.”

“Why do you want Kara?”

“She’s faster.”

“I’ll make your order a priority.”

“I’m loyal to Kara. Girl got here first.”

“He’ll take your order when he’s confident you ain’t going nowhere,” Faden intervened just then. His words did not go unnoticed. A few heads spun my way, studying me. Lance, the prospect, grinned nearby like the goof he was, ready to break out the popcorn. I felt anxious from the attention, painfully aware what his pointed comment meant. More judgment then. Seemed no matter how loyal I was to Hunter, being here around the bikers every hour of the day, they still had their reservations.

They were waiting for me to run back to Leo.

Unwilling to let them see how upset I felt, I promptly left their table, not bothering to argue with the jerks. I heard the chuckles behind me, coming from Miles and Faden and a few others. My cheeks warmed, and I was tempted to walk off the job when I heard, “Leave her the hell alone.” I spun around, catching Jesse approach Faden, shoving at his shoulder. “We don’t do that shit to our own.”

Faden, drunk out of his mind, retorted, “She’s our own when she wears Hunter’s cut—when she’s his old fucking lady.”

Miles nodded heartily. “Damn straight.”

Suddenly Hunter was at the table, standing beside Jesse, folding his giant arms. “What’s the fucking problem, fellas?”

The room fell quiet as everyone turned to watch.

“Miles refuses to be served by Skye,” Jesse said quickly, tossing a thumb my way. “Faden told her Miles would get served when he knows she won’t be running out of here.”
