“Go to him,” he choked out, looking back at Skye. “I’ll see you next month.”

She wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tightly.

He didn’t hug her back.

He needed to be cold. He needed to be alone. He needed not to allow one hour with Skye to interfere with his grind to the top. He had burnt too many bridges, got too far—he could not let this moment weaken him.

Swiftly, he dropped his head to run his nose along her hair. He smelled her sunshine, inhaled it deep into his lungs, and then he detached from her and walked away.
