My Perfect Enemy - Page 52

She studied me intently. “What you mean to say is you could catch feelings.”

“Yes! I mean, no! No, that’s not—There are no feelings.”

Her look said clear as day that she didn’t believe me. Fortunately, she let it go. “Well, if you aren’t worried about catching feelings, there’s no problem. There’s no real risk of complication, and it’ll put you in a much better mood. Win-win.”

She made it sound so damn easy, as if I were stressing out for no damn good reason. But... wait... Was I stressing out for no damn good reason? I could do this. I’d done it before. I knew how to separate sex from emotions. What the hell was I beating myself up for?”

I rose to my feet with determination. “You know what? You’re right?”

“Usually am.”

“I’m torturing myself for nothing. I’m going to take your suggestion. Damn, you’re one smart cookie.”

She laughed as I leaned down to place a kiss to her cheek. “Glad you finally realized that. Don’t forget your coffee.”

I skidded to a halt on my way to the door and whipped back around, snatching up my coffee cup and the rest of my scone. Then I hustled out of there as fast as my heels could take me.

My blood was churning by the time I got back to the office. Determination and hormones were raging like whitewater inside me. I crossed the threshold into Nate’s office and slammed the door behind me.

He glanced up, the very picture of calm. “Feeling better?”

“I will be in about one minute,” I said as I kicked off my heels and started in his direction. “Just as soon as you take off your pants.”
