My Perfect Enemy - Page 5

“Well, you’re welcome. And thanks for making a shitty day pretty damn good there at the end.”

“It’s a gift,” I said with a shrug. Reaching down to grab my purse from where I’d dropped it on the antique writer’s desk nestled in front of the window, I hooked the strap over my shoulder and moved back to the bed. Leaning down, I brushed my lips gently against his in one last kiss. “Last night was fun. I haven’t had a whole lot of that lately, so thank you.”

“You sure you have to go?” he asked in a husky voice.

When I pulled back, I noticed his eyes had grown dark and his breathing was heavier; if I didn’t leave now, I’d definitely get caught, and that couldn’t happen. “Yeah, I do.”

“I get it,” he said, his voice gentle and quiet. He understood what this was as much as I did: an itch that needed to be scratched, nothing more. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”

He wouldn’t but that was okay. This was the kind of man you couldn’t help but want to settle down with, and I was anything but the settling down type. Unable to help myself, I leaned in for one last kiss that he took deeper by grabbing hold of the nape of my neck and sliding his tongue between my lips. By the time we pulled apart, I was out of breath and seriously contemplating saying to hell with the gossip and diving back into bed with him.

But that would only complicate things. And the last thing I needed in my chaotic life was another complication.

“Yeah, maybe,” I told him noncommittally. Then I headed for the door, determined to leave the best sex I’d ever had behind me for good.
