“Killing is messy business. Anything can happen,” he says, not getting the hint that he should lighten up now.
I sigh, resisting the urge to mutter, “Yeah, yeah,” because I’ve heard this many times from him, and Cross, and Ice and pretty much all the others.
“OK, I’ll call Mom in the morning,” I say instead and he nods, then walks back to Cross’ office.
I take the stairs two at a time on my way upstairs. I doubt I’ll find any sleep in my bedroom here, so there’s no hurry, but I’m hurrying anyway.
