The Wife Win - Page 10

With my patience wearing thin, my eyes bore into hers with such intensity that fireballs could literally launch. My voice is brusque and terse. “Then you go through the normal channels to request an interview just like everyone else. This scheme of yours won’t work.”

Harper has the gall to look offended, her eyes flashing with annoyance, which throws me off-guard. What the hell does she have to be annoyed with? I’m the one she’s played the fool.

“Scheme? Seriously? You think I’m playing games here?”

My gaze skates over every inch of her, daring her to contradict me.

“If you weren’t, you wouldn’t have tricked me and played dirty. A little word of advice, Miss Conrad.” I crane my neck out and pin her with a glare. “Play by the rules. It gets you further in life.”

Harper steps backward, right into a large pothole filled with rainwater, her expression once again changing. This time it morphs from righteous indignation into a look of defeat.

Not my problem. I don’t owe her anything.

Had I not been burned in the past and my personal business splashed all over the news and Twitter, I might have been more open to giving Harper Conrad a break.

But I’ve learned my lesson the hard way and I won’t fall for that deceit again. No matter how dejected or beautiful this woman looks.

That’s life. It’s unfair at best and nobody ever owes you a goddamn thing.
