Faking It with the Frenemy - Page 90

I roll my eyes. “I’m not going to plow through half the city like you did.”

“No need for past tense. But plow is correct. Why do you think I volunteered to be relocated? Mom was getting too nosy about my personal life.”

“Well, I’m not going to drown myself in women. I have a kid.”

“Uh-huh. But that was an ‘I got laid and I’m gonna get laid again’ smile.”

I shake my head. “More to life than just getting laid, partner.”

“Only if the sex is bad.”

“And I do believe I’m settled on one woman,” I say, completely ignoring him.

“No way! You’re finally single and you’re going to limit yourself to one? Already?”

“I know what I like, and what I like isn’t sampling every meat in the market.”

Another ping interrupts us. HR. Finally!

–Nancy: Three today. She has another interview this morning.

Damn it.

–Me: Is she going to take the other job if they offer or at least wait until the interview with me?

–Nancy: She said she’s going to look at all her offers first.

“Everything okay?” David asks.

“Yeah. A possible new assistant.”

David frowns. “Melanie not working out?”

“If by ‘working out’ you mean ‘making my job five times harder,’ yeah, she’s working out fine.”

“That’s too bad. She bakes great cookies. And she really wants to be here.”

My jaw slackens because he’s the second person to say this. I never thought she wanted to be at Sweet Darlings long-term, especially based on how little she cares about doing her job. “Did she tell you she wanted to be my permanent assistant, too?”

He nods. “Didn’t you know? She’s waiting for you to make her an offer.”

It’s like hearing that the Pentagon decided to test nukes on the moon. “Why in the world would she think that’s going to happen?”

“Aren’t you?”

“No. She’s the worst assistant, ever.”

David nods. “I guess your ex-wife isn’t the only deluded woman around.”

“Got that right. Some people can fool themselves into anything. But anyway, I gotta go.”

“I thought we were having lunch with Dane today.”

Were we? I forgot. But… “Sorry, bud. I got a better offer.”
