Chapter Six

Quinn

Flying for thefirst time was an experience. One Quinn didn’t want to encounter again anytime soon. Her Wolf was antsy being cooped up in a flying tin can, so it reached out to Kyllian’s Gryphon. She could sense her animal talking, but she didn’t know what it was saying. It worried her, the not knowing. She didn’t doubt it was conspiring against her. They both knew Kyllian was their mate, but Quinn wasn’t ready to accept it.

Kyllian isn’t like that sonofabitch.

Oh, now you want to talk to me?And who said anything about Blake?

I know you.You vowed to never allow anyone close again after what he did to you.

Quinn didn’t respond. She latched onto Kyllian’s hand for comfort against her better judgment. She had to admit the connection was nice. And when he kissed her hair? She felt wanted for the first time in forever.Blake had been charming, and Quinn had been too young and naïve to know she was being played.Even though she hadn’t dated anyone, hadn’t been around men other than her father, she liked to think she was a better judge of character at thirty-six than she’d been as a teen.Staying away from others, Quinn spent her free time devouring forums on male behavior. She majored in psychology at the university she attended online. Some of her classes required her to participate via video chat, so it wasn’t as though Quinn never interacted with anyone. She just didn’t do it in person.

She also had to consider who Kyllian was.He was the son of one of her dad’s oldest and dearest friends. Her fatherwasa good judge of character.According to Trenton, Sutton Lazlo was the best male he knew.Sutton wouldn’t have sent Kyllian to watch over Quinn if he, too, weren’t a good male. When Kyllian spoke of being a pain master, it was more of the service he provided instead of the sexual aspect. If she were to give in to her Wolf’s desire to mate with the male, she didn’t know if she could give him what he needed.Quinn had been with only one male in her life. They had been two horny kids going at it, or so she thought.Blake made her first time memorable. He hadn’t taken her against her wishes. She admitted to being a virgin, and he took care with her.Once she was pregnant, he didn’t touch her again.Everything that came after – him taking Nikita – tainted the experience.Kyllian was sex personified. He said he would compromise and keep his sexual encounters to his mate only, but would she be enough to keep him satisfied?

True mates don’t want anyone else.

Gryphons don’t have true mates. One of his brothers has kids with someone who isn’t his mate.

The mother wasn’t his mate.

What if I’m not Kyllian’s mate? What if I give myself to him and he tosses me aside?I can’t go through that again.

We are their mate. They feel it.

I need to focus on Nikita.

Kyllian tugged on her hand, bringing Quinn back to the conversation.“How are you going to handle seeing Blake again?”

Quinn narrowed her eyes.“I’m going to rip his fucking throat out.He used me, then stole my child.Lied about me, turning my daughter against me.”

Mercy gasped in the backseat.“He’s a powerful alpha.”

Quinn turned her anger to the female.“So am I.Plus I’m a dire wolf.I might not have fought anyone since Stewart, but Blake doesn’t scare me.”

“Plus she has me.”Kyllian squeezed Quinn’s hand again, returning her focus to him.“Don’t forget though, if you put Blake down, you’ll be Alpha.Again.You said you don’t want that.”

Quinn leaned back in her seat. No, she didn’t want that.“No.I don’t want a pack who allows males like Blake and his father to lead.”

“Then I guess I wasted a lot of fucking years keeping tabs on you.”Mercy’s anger was palpable.

Quinn turned to look at the female again.“Why would you want me to be Alpha?”

“Because it’s like you said; we should have a leader who’s honorable.”

Huh.“I don’t know anything about leading.Except for the few months I was with the Ozark pack, I’ve lived a sheltered life.If you’ve watched me closely, you know I don’t get out.I don’t associate with others.Every interaction I’ve had since returning to my father all those years ago has been online.”

“Why did you give up looking for Nikita?”Mercy asked.

“I was a kid.I searched for over a month, but I was alone, tired, and scared.I needed my dad.”

“Why didn’t you tell him what happened?Wouldn’t he have helped you search for your daughter? He is a wolf after all.Did you think he wouldn’t understand?”Mercy’s tone wasn’t judgmental, only curious.

“I tried to tell him so many times, but I didn’t want him disappointed. He would have helped, but our lives were crazy enough, moving from town to town. The more we moved, the farther away from your pack we got. After a while, it became easier to believe my baby was where she was supposed to be, as was I.Did you tell Blake you were coming to get me?”

“No, because then I’d have to tell him how I knew where you were all this time.He would consider it treason against the pack.Jeremy and I made a vow to one another to keep you a secret until we couldn’t.Kinsley’s family is also part of the Ozark pack, and if Blake made us leave, Kinsley wouldn’t take it well. That’s the biggest reason I know she didn’t betray us.”

Mercy’s phone rang, and Quinn faced forward again, taking in the scenery. She had never been in this part of the country, not that she remembered anyway.Trenton had zigzagged all over but had stayed away from New Mexico.
