Just for You - Page 85

“Manic’s had an accident. He hit a patch of ice and came off his bike.”

I didn’t hear anything else; a buzzing started in my ears, and my heart exploded in my chest. My breathing quickened, and I couldn’t seem to exhale. Black dots danced at the edges of my eyes. Lila was talking, but I didn’t know what she was saying—

My feet went out from under me.

* * *

I blinked, and Gerald was crouched over me. “Breathe slow and easy, Adds.” He had a cool cloth and was pressing it to my face.

Lila was beside him.

“Is he dead?” I choked out, my breathing growing erratic all over again, hot tears filling my eyes. “Oh god, he’s dead, isn’t he?”

“No, he’s fine,” Gerald said, taking my hand. “I promise, he’s okay.”

All I’d heard was he’d come off his bike. Nothing else had registered once Lila had said those words.

She handed me a glass of water. “I’m sorry.” She bit her lip. “I wasn’t supposed to tell you. Manic didn’t want you to worry.”

“Where is he?” I tried to catch my breath and sit up.

“Riff’s taking him home. Just a few scrapes and bruises, apparently.”

I nodded and kind of felt like an idiot now, but my heart wouldn’t stop racing.

Gerald helped me to my feet. My hands were cold, and the dread was still a heavy knot in my stomach. For those few moments, he was dead. In my head and my heart, I thought I’d lost him.

“Are you okay?” Ly asked.

No, I wasn’t. Inside, I was still freaking out. “I need to see him.” I had to see for myself that he was okay.

“I’ll drive,” Lila said, putting her arm around my shoulders.

I forced a smile. “Thanks.”

She talked to me as we headed to Manic’s place, but I struggled to keep up with the conversation. My mind was on one thing.

What I could have lost.

Again.
