ADDIE

We stopped for the night, three hours from Manic’s mountain home. He was wiped and had already reserved a place to stay. The small town of Ridgeford was pretty all lit up since it was early evening. The storefronts bright and cheerful, and there were people everywhere, the streets buzzing with activity due to some vintage car show they apparently had here every year.

Staying here tonight was good…and bad.

Good, because I was nervous about meeting his family. I was all for delaying my part in this crazy fake-girlfriend scheme of Manic’s. I glanced out the window again. And bad, because we were currently parked outside the cutest little B&B I had ever seen. It was like something from a Christmas card. The perfect romantic getaway—it actually said that on the freaking sign out front.

“We passed a motel back there. It has to be cheaper than this place,” I said and tried not to sound desperate.

“It’s full. I tried weeks ago, but everything else is booked up.”

I looked at the cute little building again, and a flurry of nerves exploded in my belly. I couldn’t believe this was actually happening. That I was here, with Manic, because of something I didn’t even remember agreeing to. This whole thing was nuts. “Maybe there’s been a cancellation? Did you call again?”

“Yeah, I called again. Thank fuck you’re here. Didn’t want to stay in this fucking gingerbread house on my own like some weirdo.”

Oh hell. “So you’ve only got the one room, then?”

“Yep.”

Of course, one room, he’d planned to come alone. “Are there at least two beds?”

“Nope.”

Wonderful. All this one-on-one time was not a good idea. I’d wanted to sleep with him again, but notthis. This was way too dangerous. “So we have to sleep together?”

He grinned. “Yeah, baby, but I promise not to hog the covers.”

A very visceral memory filled my head and had me heating all over. I cleared my throat. “Cut it out.” I rolled my eyes, but my belly swooped. He hadn’t hogged the covers the night we’d slept together. No, he’d wrapped himself around me like a human electric blanket.

Don’t think about it.

His brown gaze hit mine. “Cut what out?”

“The flirting. Friends don’t flirt.”

He threw his head back and laughed. God, I loved his laugh.

“I’ve never flirted a day in my life, cupcake. I’m a man. I say what I want, then I work to get it.”

He did. The man had a single-minded focus like no other. I knew that better than anyone.

Manic grabbed the bags, and I followed him, taking the stairs to the porch and through the door.Oh wow. I looked at Manic and bit my lips to hold back my grin.

Seeing him in this place was comical. This big, bearded biker in what looked like grandma’s house, with all the frills and floral fabrics. There were actual doilies on the entryway table and under the lamp on the counter.

An older woman walked out, beaming. “Mr. Smith?”

“Yeah, that’s me,” Manic said.

“We’ve been expecting you. I’m Ann. We talked on the phone.”

Manic strode forward to talk to her while I turned slowly, taking the place in properly. A fire was blazing in the sitting room off to the right, and a big tabby was sprawled out on one of the chairs. Everything was well loved and obviously cared for. I actually kinda loved the grandma vibe, it was warm and comforting.

“So, how long have you been married?” Ann asked Manic, dragging my attention back to them.

“Newlyweds,” he said, a huge-ass grin curling his lips.
