CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

“You got some didn’t you?”

My head snaps in the direction of Jamille, finding her brown eyes full of mischief and a smirk on her face.

“What?”

She rolls her eyes. “Bitch, you heard me.” One of the parents sitting on the bleacher behind us lets out a cough. Jamille turns and gives him a glare but she lowers her voice and leans closer as she repeats herself. “You. Got. Some.”

My mouth falls open as I stare at her knowing grin. I don’t even try to lie. “How in the hell do you know?”

She waves a hand. “Girl, it’s written all over your face. The way you keep biting your lips every time you look over at the dugout before flushing.” Her eyes move over to the dugout in question where Chase, Nathan, and the baseball team sit. “Now I’m just trying to figure out if it was Chase or Nathan.” She returns her gaze to me and raises a brow.

I shake my head. “You’re going to bug me until I tell you, aren’t you?”

She pushes a hand through her curly hair. “Of course I am.”

For a moment, I consider not telling her, but a part of me is bursting at the seams to talk to someone about what happened. And considering Jamille is the only true friend I have these days other than the guys, who don’t quite count… “It was Nathan,” I admit.

Her lips part slightly and she looks over to the dugout. “Really? I would have guessed Chase since everyone knows that you two were up to no good at lunch the other week.”

My cheeks flush. “Honestly, he could have just been comforting me. Why does everyone think we were… canoodling?” I use Grandma’s words, thinking of a similar conversation I had with her.

Jamille lets out a snort. “Yea right, your hand was a mess when you came back and your clothes were more than a little rumpled. I won’t grill you on that, though. I want to know about your recent little sexcapade.”

I look out at the field where the teams and coaches are walking on to get ready for the game. Nathan turns and even from across the field, his eyes meet mine and I watch his lips turn up into a smile.

My heart goes wild in my chest.

I look away only to find Jamille’s smile is wider and somehow even more arrogant than usual. “Okay, so it was definitely good?”

“It was more than good,” the words leave my lips before I can think about them. “I mean, shit, I don’t even know how to describe it.” I look to her as I try to find a word for what Nathan and I shared, but there isn’t one I can think of.

I lower my voice and lean in closer to her. Her eyes widen as she eagerly awaits for some juicy gossip. “It was hot and I came like a freight train, but it was also intense and… passionate. It was more than just sex.”

Jamille nods. “It sounds like someone may have been struck by the lovebug.”

I instantly shake my head. “No… I’m not…” I clear my throat when it suddenly feels like there’s something stuck in it. “I’m not in love,” I tell her firmly.

She raises a brow, tapping her fingers on her knee. “Hmm… maybe not, but it certainly sounds like you’re headed in that direction.”

Her words strike a chord as I look at Chase and Nathan as they chat with the opposing team’s coaches.

My skin grows hot and my heart skips a beat.

Love? No, I’m not in love. I’ve only known these men for some odd months and half the time I don’t even know what the fuck I’m doing with them. So, there’s no way I can be in love.

But… Whatever I felt the other day with Nathan was an emotion that felt way too strong to use a word such as like.

I bite my lip and turn an evil eye on Jamille. “Don’t make things more than what they are.” Don’t make me consider the strength of the attachment I’ve grown to these men.

She holds up her hands in surrender. “Hey, if you want to be in denial, then fine.”

“I’m not in denial,” I mutter, turning my gaze to the game that’s now beginning.

Luckily, Jamille drops the subject.

“Tanner does not look happy having to sit on the bench,” she says instead.
