Dead Girls Never Talk - Page 88

There was silence on his end, and I knew all eyes were on us. I wanted to bang my fist onto the plastic as many times as it took until it cracked and I could reach inside and choke him. With my mother leaving me, him being who he was, and the fact that Journey, the only person on this earth that I was irrevocably attached to, had been fucking sold to some piece of shit… I was rioting on the inside.

“Let’s go.” I pulled my glare from my father and saw Isaiah standing beside me on the right and Brantley standing beside me on the left. Brantley’s jaw was flexing as his nostrils flared, shifting his steely gaze from my father, to Isaiah’s, and then to his. The guards came up behind our fathers as we began walking away, and that was when Carlisle called out, “You better keep your end of the deal, son. I can give the order now, if need be.”

Isaiah grinned. “Fuck you.”

Carlisle’s fist banged onto the plastic, and it was the last thing we saw as we turned our backs and walked out of the prison.

It didn’t take long for us to climb back into the SUV and for Isaiah to break the silence. “You know what this means, right?”

My leg shook the entire car as we flew down the freeway. Isaiah had been buried in his phone, checking it every few minutes as Brantley drove.

“Which part?” Brantley asked.

My stomach was heavy, and my lungs were tight. I’d gnawed off part of my fucking cheek, trying to sort through everything.

“Cade. Did you hear me? You know what this means, right?”

I snapped my head up to Isaiah, hardly seeing him in the dark interior of the car. “That Journey was fucking sold like some fucking toy? Yeah, I heard him.”

“No,” Isaiah snapped. “It means that Bain and Journey are half-brother and sister.”

My face fell, and my shoulders were next. I ran over the information that Carlisle had given to us. Callum’s wife had cheated on him, so he sold the baby. Callum’s wife = Bain’s mother.

“That explains a fuck-ton,” Brantley said before flipping Isaiah’s phone out of his hand. “You’re fucking stressing me out. Why do you keep looking at your phone? What? Is Gemma sexting you or something?”

Isaiah bent down and picked it up off the floor, clearly agitated. “She isn’t answering my texts.”

Like a racehorse, my heart flew right the fuck out of my chest. “What do you mean she isn’t answering you? Is her location on?”

“Yeah, it says she's at St. Mary’s. Last text from her was right before we went into the prison. She said she was hanging out in Journey’s room.”

“For fuck’s sake.” Brantley hit Shiner’s name on the touchscreen of the SUV, and the ringtone came over the speakers.

This is why Journey needs a phone. Part of me wanted to put a goddamn tracking device on her.

Shiner’s phone rang and rang, and Brantley’s hand tightened on the wheel so hard I heard his knuckles crack.

“Isaiah.” The calmness in my voice should have alarmed everyone in the car. “If she isn’t at the fucking school when we get there, I will tear the goddamn world apart.”

He looked over at me and nodded. “And we’ll help you.”
