Hook (A Hitman's Bait 2) - Page 72

I cupped Sully’s face in my hands and pulled him down so I could smooch him good. “I’d be only too glad to be your boy toy, Mr. Matthews.” Fluttering my eyelashes at him, I bit my lip. “Are you going to make it worth my while?”

Sully groaned. “Kit, don’t get me excited right now, please. I’m trying to wine and dine you. Here, give me your arm.”

I offered him my arm, and he led me down the fairy-lit path to our table. Only then did he release my arm and pulled out a chair for me. When I was seated, he sat across from me.

“What do you think?” he asked.

“How lucky I am,” I replied. “When I was getting dressed, I kept thinking that I could no longer disagree with Tack that you’ve become my sugar daddy.”

He chuckled. “Because I bought you a few things?”

“It’s not a few things. Sully, you spoil me rotten, and I love you all the more for it. Because I know it comes from a good place.”

A server appeared at our table, carrying a bottle of wine. He showed Sully the bottle, and after his approval, poured a small amount into Sully’s glass. Sully took up the glass, swirled it around, and took a sip. He nodded to the server, who filled up his glass.

“I took the liberty of ordering before you came,” Sully said. “I hope you don’t mind.”

“That’s okay, but I might be too excited to eat.” I nodded at the server, who’d poured me a glass of wine too. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Sully raised his glass. “Let’s make a toast.”

I raised mine. “To what?”

“Our happiness.”

“I’ll drink to that.” The wine was fantastic. It tasted too good to be anything cheap. “You must have paid a small fortune to set this up.”

“No talk about money tonight.”

“Can I at least say thank you for the beautiful gifts today? I love the outfit so much.”

“You make it look even more amazing.”

“You picked it out yourself?”

“Yes, Liam is completely useless in these matters.”

The image popped up in my head of Sully and Liam, arguing as they so often did, but now about an outfit I’d like.

“You have great taste. It makes me feel sexy.”

He winked. “You don’t need clothes for that. Just get naked, and I’ll show you how sexy you are.”

To give the server credit, he didn’t react to a thing he might overhear. He was so good at what he did. I hardly noticed when plate after plate was placed before me, then taken away.

“Sully,” I said as we lingered over dessert.

“Yes?”

“What was your father like?” The second I asked, I wanted to take it back. Stupid. Stupid. Why would I bring him up when we were having such a good time?

“My father…”

“You don’t have to tell me. Let’s forget it.”

“No.” He placed a hand over mine. “I don’t talk about him enough. He was a good family man, a great husband to my mother, and an amazing father. As the eldest, I had him the longest, and we had a close relationship. I followed in his footsteps and joined the military right out of high school. He was so proud that day.”
