Chapter 16

Sullywouldbehome soon. I swam over to the edge of the pool and hoisted myself out. I squeezed the excess water out of my hair, grabbed my towel from the chaise lounge, and wrapped it around my naked body. Who knew swimming in the nude could feel so freeing?

I wiped my wet hands into the towel, then checked my phone to see if Sully had sent me a message. Three missed calls! I immediately rang him back, but the call went straight to voicemail. I groaned. Where was he? He hadn’t told me much other than that he and Liam needed to meet with an informant.

Inside, I ran into Maggie in the hall. I’d apologized to her about the laundry, but we hadn’t made as much progress as I’d wanted. She hadn’t made our bed again, though, so I assumed Sully had talked to her about it. We mostly stayed out of each other’s way.

“Sorry.” I gave her an apologetic smile and stepped around her.

“Mr. Kit, please wait.”

I stopped and turned. Would she finally say she was sorry? When I apologized to her, I’d thought she would do the same to me for the things she had done, but she never did.

“Yes? Is something wrong, Maggie?”

“Mr. Matthews called. He was worried because you didn’t answer your phone, but I told him you were in the pool.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“He said not to disturb you.”

“Oh.”

“He had something delivered for you. I’ve placed it on your bed, as Mr. Matthews instructed.”

Hmm, what could it be?

“Thank you, Maggie.”

“Mr. Kit—”

I wrinkled my nose. “Mr. Kit sounds like medical equipment. Why don’t you just call me Kit? Or Kitson?”

“Kitson.” Stubborn woman, but at least she’d dropped the Mr. nonsense. “I-I wanted to apologize to you for a few things. I meant nothing by remaking the bed in the mornings. Mr. Matthews never told me to no longer make his bed, so I still thought it was my job. I’m sorry if I overstepped my boundaries.”

Color me stunned. “It’s fine, Maggie. When I moved in, Sully and I should have discussed our expectations with you. I’m not used to having someone do things for me, so it took a little getting used to. I hope you don’t feel as if I’m trying to take away your job.”

She dropped her gaze. “I admit that at first the thought crossed my mind.”

“Don’t think too much about it, Maggie. I promise we’re good.”

“There’s one more thing.”

“Yes?”

“About the breakfast that morning.” She looked at me then. “I didn’t make a fresh breakfast because I disapproved of what you’d made. I just wanted to help, seeing as you wanted to make a good impression on Mr. Matthews. His breakfast preference is something I’ve had years practicing, so I gave a little helping hand. I never meant to take any credit at all for it.”

“I understand. Thanks for clearing that up, Maggie. Maybe next time, I’ll ask your opinion about what to make him when I want to treat him.”

“I’d love to help.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll be going now. I’ll see you on Monday.”

“Be safe.”

I ambled up the stairs, smiling. Maybe this was what we needed to bury the hatchet and move on. Neither of us was going anywhere anytime soon. I hoped.
