Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 108

I slumped in my chair. His compliment didn’t even make me feel better, and Julia Roberts was gorgeous in that movie. “Maybe I was too stupid to think I could have it all.”

“Hmm.” Tack took a huge bite of his pizza and swallowed. “Working and making your own money means a lot to you, doesn’t it?”

“It does.”

“Then don’t relent. Make him understand.”

Didn’t he think I had been doing that for the past three days? Nothing I had or hadn’t said had changed Sully’s mind, and I was all angered out. How much longer could I stay mad at him? It wasn’t as if he had a selfish reason for not wanting me to work. He was trying to protect me.

A knock sounded on the front door. I raised my eyebrow at Tack, and he shrugged.

“If Lewis has come back, I’ll kick him in the nuts.” He got up from the table and, with a slice of half-eaten pizza in hand, went to answer the door.

“Where is he?”

I froze.

Sully? How the hell did he know where to find me?

“You’ll have to be more specific,” Tack said. “If you’re asking for the president, I’d guess at the White House, and if it’s Prince Philip, check Bucking—”

“Kit. Where is he?”

“Hmm, are you saying you lost a kitty? I think I saw one—”

“Listen to me, boy. Don’t play games with me. Where’s Kit?”

Tack yelped. I sprang up from the chair and ran out of the kitchen. Sully had the boy by his arms, Tack’s feet dangling in the air.

“Damn, you’re strong,” Tack said. “I see why he’s into you. Which factory were you made in?”

“Put him down!”

Sully lowered Tack to the floor and marched over to me. Frowning, he grabbed my shoulders and spun me around.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking that your body parts are still functioning. Why didn’t you answer my calls?”

I shrugged off his hands. “Stop that. I texted you that I’m fine. I just need some space.”

“Why do you need space?”

“Because…” I toed the carpet and dropped my gaze to his torso.

“Because what?”

“I thought you’d be upset, and I didn’t want to hear you yelling at me over the phone.”

Tack inched by us. “I think I’ll just give you two some privacy to talk this out. Kit, if you need someone to rescue you, just yell.”

Sully scowled at him, and I winced, but Tack just raised his chin. Would he still be so confident if he knew Sully killed people for a living? I highly doubted that.

“I don’t like when you ignore my calls. We’re in this as a couple, Kit, and if this is going to work, you need to communicate.”

“I’m sorry, but—”

“Are you really? Because you seem to be on a vindictive path. Make me pay for not allowing you to work.”
