Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 101

TWENTY-FIVE

“Whatareyoudoing today?”

It’d been three days of Kit giving me the cold shoulder, and although I didn’t know if he was going to ignore me or talk to me this time, I tried to spark a conversation.

He grumbled something under his breath and bit into a strawberry. The juice ran down the corner of his mouth, and he absent-mindedly used his finger to swipe at it and popped it into his mouth. My three-day-old sex-starved cock perked up at the innocent gesture. I’d drawn the line at him moving his belongings to one of the guest bedrooms, but I wouldn’t force him to have sex with me, so we’d both gone unfulfilled for three days.

It wasn’t like it was the end of the world.

And yet it was.

I felt like someone who’d just been given a favorite toy to play with, then had it taken away before I could really appreciate it.

I knew the magic words to get things back to normal, but nothing had changed. I didn’t want him to be my bait. What kind of man would I be, deliberately putting him in harm’s way? Why couldn’t he see that wasn’t ideal?

“Can you repeat that?” I pushed.

He glanced up from his phone. “Depends. Do you have a job for me? I’m running low on cash.”

I groaned. “Are you still sending money to those friends of yours from the brothel?”

“Maybe.”

“You have the credit card I gave you. Use it.”

“Are you sure you want me to do that?”

“Give it your best shot.” I shrugged. “I don’t care how much you spend. Just know if I’m broke, you’ll submit yourself to living with a broke man for the rest of your life.”

“Don’t even try to be funny. I’m still mad at you for forbidding me to work with you just because I’m sleeping with you.”

I tilted his chin. “We’re not talking about this again.” I kissed him hard. “Try to put yourself in my shoes a little, and maybe you’ll understand.”

He snorted, but I ignored it. It wasn’t like I was leaving him destitute. He wouldn’t want for anything.

“Maybe I’ll find another job,” he said.

“Fine with me, as long as you’re not back to selling your body, nor working for me.”

“Damn you, Sully! Do you know how hard it is to get a decent job for someone like me? I have no skills and no experience. I know, why don’t I put you as a reference? Think working for a hitman will go down well with prospective employers?”

I continued walking.

“Don’t walk away from me!”

Something hit me hard on the back. I turned and found a strawberry smashed on the floor.

“Did you just throw that at me?” I scowled at him. He was seriously begging for a spanking today.

Kit grabbed the plastic bowl of strawberries and bolted past me. “You deserved it for walking out on me!” he yelled when he had put a good few feet between us. “I am trying to have a conversation with you, and you won’t listen. At least that got your attention.”

“You need to clean that up, Kit.”

“I’m not your maid.”

“Kit!”

“Fine, I’ll clean it up when you’re gone. I don’t trust you not to spank me.”
