Lure (A Hitman's Bait 1) - Page 21

“What do you think?” He sauntered away from me. That damn cattail was a distraction, bobbing along his ass. He spun around and put one foot out. “They’re cute, aren’t they?”

“They are lovely.”

He beamed. “Want to see what else I got?”

No, I didn’t want to see what else he bought. We were late in discussing the first task I wanted to assign him. I opened my mouth to tell him exactly that.

“Sure.”

I stifled my groan. From the two days Liam and I had spent with him, Kit seemed to have an average intelligence, which was fine, considering what we hired him to do, but he tended to get distracted. That was when he appeared all ditzy blond and all.

He pushed me toward the bed to sit and dug through the bags. One by one, he pulled out outfits—extremely revealing outfits—and slapped them to his chest or to his hips to give me a visual of what he would look like wearing them. Half of his excited chatter went through one ear and out the next. He upended the next bag on the bed, and my eyes bugged out of my head.

“Oops!” He grabbed the butt plug with the kitty tail attached to it and dumped it back inside. “I don’t think you need to see these, and the rest is new underwear. I love lace, and I might have splurged a bit because I always just get a stipend.”

How could I be mad at him for doing something he was never allowed while working for that pimp? He looked so happy from shopping—something I did only because it was a necessity, not because I actually enjoyed doing it.

“Don’t worry about it.”

“So what do you think?” he asked. “Did I do good?”

“We might need to get you a few more things.” I got to my feet. “More formal outfits, but we can do that tomorrow after your driving lesson.”

He wrung his hands together. “Driving lessons? Are you sure about that?”

“Yup. You need to learn to drive a car. I’m surprised you don’t know how already. It’s a useful skill that everyone should have.”

“Well, can’t you just hire a driver for me? Or I can take a cab.”

“No, the fewer people who know about what we’re doing, the better.”

“I should warn you I’m terrible at driving. I don’t know why, but being behind the steering wheel always makes me so tense, and then I overcorrect, and before you know it, I’m sitting pretty in a ditch. My last driving instructor bailed on me. Said never again.”

“What’s with you and ditches?” I strode toward the door. “We do need to go through some stuff for your first job. I’ll be waiting in the living room.”

I set up my laptop and connected it to the television. Kit swooped into the room like a bird. He’d changed out of the catsuit and wore a pair of billowy orange shorts and a tan camisole. Which was worse? The skin-tight material of his earlier outfit or the loose shift flirting around his thighs?

What the hell was happening to me? I didn’t notice guys.

“Sully, did you hear what I just said?”

“Huh?” Heat crept up my neck and spread to my face. I dropped my gaze to the computer screen.

“I asked if I could get you something to drink. I know you said I shouldn’t be drinking on the job, but I got some beer for when you and Liam come over.”

“Sure, beer is fine.”

He breezed out of the living room in the same manner as he’d entered, light on his feet. I had a video displayed on the television screen, ready to play, when he returned with my beer and a glass of milk for himself.

“What’s that?” Kit curled up in an accent chair—a recent addition—and pulled the mustard-yellow throw over his lap.

“It’s a video about dining etiquette.” I took a gulp of my beer. Not my favorite drink, but it would do. “Our first assignment should be relatively easy, but for you to fit in, you need to understand proper dining etiquette.”

“Oh? Is it hard?”

Was he kidding me? He looked serious. “I wouldn’t say hard, but it’s a lot, especially if it’s not something you’re used to. But with lots of practicing, it’ll get better. Second nature.”

He sighed. “Too bad my second nature is knowing my way around a dick, not a fork. Let’s play it, then.”
