Our Fugitive Bride (Treasure Falls Brides 1) - Page 40

“Two sightings in one day and I saw it all with my own eyes,” Jesse said. “I didn’t believe in the legend, but here is proof.”

Knowing how much pain he felt as a child to lose his loved ones, Mary went to Andrew and wrapped her arms around him. “We’re your family now. You’ll never forget them, but we will always be here for you. Your children will know of them and how they died, but they will never experience the heartache you felt in the orphanage.”

Andrew hugged Mary tightly. “Thank you.”

“Let’s go home,” Jesse said. “I’ll send someone to the sheriff and he can take care of the body. If this wasn’t such a beautiful spot, I’d let the vultures take care of him.”

A shiver went through Mary and she sighed. “What about the guard?”

“He’s the one who came and told us you were in trouble,” Jesse said.

“Let’s go home,” Mary said. “It’s over. But we do need to talk. There are some things you men need to tell me. Kansas City is one.”

The two men turned and stared at her. “How did you know?”

“Seems that Frank Thompson was once a victim in your card games.”

Jesse started laughing. “That’s why he looks so familiar. He’s that crazy guy we duped in Savannah. He’s the one who tried to stop us from fighting.”

With a sigh, Andrew glanced over at Mary. “Let’s go home, darling, and we’ll tell you our secrets.”

She glanced between the two men and shook her head. “I hope you took all his money.”

“Oh, we did,” Jesse said. “And it’s something we’re never going to do again. In fact, we’re working hard to pay back to the community of Treasure Falls what we did wrong.”

“And we’ll never be able to pay it all back,” Andrew said. “But, darling, you don’t ever have to worry about us doing it again.”

“Good to know,” she said. “Now take me home and tell me everything.”
