The Assistant - Page 53

“Please don’t,” he said, interrupting her. “I’m really enjoying it.”

She warmed from his response but didn’t show him that. Instead, she shifted in her seat, nervous to even bring up the conversation she had overheard today. But she had to, her role was support him, therefore he needed to be honest with her. “Emery, is there anything I can do to fix what happened between you and the builder?”

He took another bite, freeing up his hands, which he wrapped around his mug. “His foreman is at the site doing some measurements and he thinks my numbers are going to be off when the ground thaws.”

“And you say?”

“These designs took months’ worth of research and calculations, hundreds of factors weighing in, including the change in temperature. For a foreman—not even an engineer or construction manager—to make such a prediction is ludicrous and far above his scope of knowledge.”

Charlotte brought the coffee up to her mouth, taking several drinks from it, liking it even more because of who had made it. “Sounds like there’s only one thing we can do.”

“What’s that?”

“Bring him your research and data and prove his ass wrong.”

His smile grew to more than just a hint. Now, it covered the bottom half of his face and reached all the way to his eyes.

Charlotte already knew what he was going to say back to her, but hearing, “You’re right,” still made her whole morning and so did the site of his empty plate.
